Whatever happened to all those January sweepstakes??

Used to be, just after New Years Day, the TV ads were all about Publisher's Clearinghouse, and the other sweepstakes campaigns. Ed McMahan was always one of the poster boys for them. Also, the packets came in the mail. Over and over.

I don't miss all of this, but I am just wondering what happened?? Did the companies get busted, or something like that?

1. I saw one the other day

You now could order other things besides magazines. I think the jackpot is 3 million.

2. I just got some thing in the mail....

It was an "official notice" with a phone number to call becuase they are trying to reach me regarding my $1,000,000.00

it came from Clearwater....handwritten return address and my name and addy typed. It was in one of those "Important Delivery Letter" envelopes, the ones you tear the end off to get at it's contents.
A part of me wants to call the number, but mostly I know this is some kind of scam.

are these schemes illegal in certain states??
