Sexiness a must for today's lady singers
http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/43710095

A quick check of the Billboard Top 40 turns up a list of candidates for "America's Top Model":
Avril Lavigne, blonde stunner Carrie Underwood; tomboyish but sexy Ciara, fashionista Gwen Stefani
and hip-swiveling Shakira (on a song featuring bootylicious Beyonce).

The only two in the Top 40 who might not be considered perfect 10s: Pink, who is still svelte and appealing;
and multiplatinum Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson, who won the democratically elected "American Idol."

When asked whether a female with so-so looks and sex appeal could get a record deal,
Gretchen Wilson quickly replied: "They can't."

2. Image over talent. Unfair, disgusting, biased, but it's the media.
Mama Cass managed to make it, but had problems due to some cruel people. But at least it was the late 60s/early 70s when more than walking mannequins had a chance.

Fast forward to 1990: Martha Wash, sublime vocalist for "C & C Music Factory" was not in the music videos; the (model gorgeous) Zelma Davis used instead and lipsynced Martha's voice.

6. Back the it was more radio based.
Mama Cass would NEVER make it in an MTV world.

3. Hell Heart wanted to fire Ann Wilson when she gained weight
Ann's voice is the only reason for Heart to exist and yet a bunch of them (the men go figure) wanted to fire her. Unreal, eh?

13. I saw Heart in concert, many many years ago, and Ann Wilson
was wearing a purple velvet mini-skirt. I was sitting fifth row on the floor, and she shot a beaver right toward where I was sitting.

It's not something a person forgets.

I fell in love with her, right then and there.

Back then I was easy....

4. Pretty sure the Yeah Yeah Yeahs made the top 40
and even though I have the hots for her (Rock girls are my weakness) most people would consider Karen O smoking hot.

5. It substitutes for talent
How else to explain Beyonce - she cannot sing. She is sharp all the time.
She insists on belting out a song but her voice is not strong enough to do that well.

There are so many singers with medicore voices who have resorted to the bump and grind and they have great careers. They last as long as their last video though.

8. Who says Pink isn't sexy?
One of my goals in life is to have sex with Pink. I honestly don't care if she bites my head off and lays eggs in my dead body afterwards.

9. All too true

My favorite singer, Angela McCluskey, the reincarnation of Billie Holiday (but white), toils in relative obscurity. I find her beautiful, but she doesn't fit the common stereotype.

Her work with Telepopmusik is the shit. This lady brings tears to my eyes. Brighton Beach. Love's Almighty. Her solo stuff not so much, though it's decent. She sings differently on her solo stuff. Check her out sometime. She's worth the time.

Then again, we're talking America here. America is almost an antonym for taste and talent.

10. I see your point, but America doesn't have a monopoly on bad taste...

11. not many on that list can sing, but heck, it hardly qualifies as music anyway.
actually there's a market for women with talent that are merely attractive, if they they're willing to be something less than a 'pop star'.

:hi:
