LONDON, April 9 (UPI) -- Two British officers responding to a call of criminal damage to a road ordered a 5-year-old boy to stop playing hopscotch with his friends or face arrest.
Ryan Badland told his mother, Lisa, that police threatened to handcuff him and cart him off to jail for drawing a chalk hopscotch grid in the road near his home in Burnham-on-Sea, The Daily Mail reports.
Lisa Badland said she thinks the police should have better things to do than going after children playing hopscotch.
"There's underage drinking in the town and a 13-year-old was mugged a couple of weeks ago," she said.
Police also reprimanded the Coogan children who were playing hopscotch with Ryan at the time.
"The police told me that my children had been chalking on the street and it could actually be classed as graffiti," said Graham Coogan. "They said that they could ask me to clean it off."
As it turned out, the chalk hopscotch grid was washed away by a rainstorm
Madness! Madness, I tells you! This damned hopscotch playing by these ruffians!
