So, tell me how to take care of an eye brow piercing.
One of my chicks came home for Easter with a brand new piercing. My inclination is to clean the jewelry daily with soap and water and rinse thoroughly, then to coat the stud with neosporin and cover the entrance and exit sites with neosporin. Comments?

1. Liquid anti-bacterial soap.

And salt water is a good cleaning agent for piercings as well. (¼ teaspoon sea salt per 8oz of distilled warm water.)

Use cotton swabs and paper towels to wash/dry, not wash cloths. (Once it's healed wash cloths are okay.) To soak the piercing, invert a disposable cup (or shot glass) of water over the piercing and soak for 5-10 minutes. When finished soaking, clean around the piercing with a cotton swab and rinse with cold water to get rid of the discharge.

And make sure she doesn't play with it with unwashed hands until it's fully healed.

Don't use neosporin or anything like that, just the antibacterial soap/salt water.

2. Okay, advice per someone who has had 15 piercings:
All of which healed great.

1. Don't remove it for a month AT LEAST. Preferably two months.

2. NEVER EVER use Neosporin. It's not for puncture wounds. The petroleum base gunks things up and can seal infection in.

3. Clean twice a day with diluted unscented Dial soap or a mixture of sea salt and warm water. About a teaspoon to 8oz of water. Soak it in the sea salt mixture for 5 minutes, then rinse.

4. Don't touch it unless you're cleaning it.

(My mother, a pediatric nurse, discourages the use of Neosporin in most cases.)

7. Can I ask your advice?
Is there a way to pierce ear cartilage without having lingering excruciating pain? I've done it twice and both times had to take it out after a few weeks because of constant pain. I did the piercings myself with a starter stud, no gun or needle, and I didn't have infection at all, just pain. Did I do it the wrong way? I like the way it looks and I'd be willing to give it another go if there was a better way. One of the ears, nose and throat doctors I work for does ear piercings but he won't do the cartilage :(

9. The advice I'm to give:
Guns are bad, and starter studs are even worse especially for cartilege. You needs to have a professional piercer do it with a piercing needle. Nothing else is sharp enough to do it right.

11. I did my ear cartilage the same way
as I wanted swappable studs. I found swabbing the area often with antiseptic helped a lot. However, as LVA advises down thread, perhaps go tp a professional piercer would be better.

3. Keep the hoop moving..
through the piercing by turning it on a daily basis -- I did that after cleaning/neosporing my eyebrow piercing/hoop.

Also, be on the lookout for a piercing wound that will not heal properly. I had a surgical steel hoop when I got my piercing and months later, it was still weepy and unhealed. It turns out my nickel allergy was kicking in and causing a chronic irritation of the wound. I had a titanium hoop put in instead and, within a week, it was healed completely.

4. Take it out and throw it away.
Nothing looks stupider than an eyebrow piercing. :)

6. I did get her to swear never to put anything in her mouth!
I have 5 kids headed into technical fields and 1 liberal arts major. I figure that she will be able to take it out for job interviews and that it might even be acceptable for the kind of job she's going to be looking for, so I can't complain. Heavens knows, there are a lot worse things for kids to stick into their bodies these days!

I guess you're getting off lucky. :D Good luck with her, she sounds like a free spirit, and that's always a good thing. :)
