I think it's a season 4 episode; they've been forced to land on a planet containing a metallic liquid capable of cloning items or individuals... because they've ran out of deuterium or whatever and the planet contains enough of it for them to refuel with...

I don't know why, but it's rather good...

1. OMG, I loved ST:V!!!
My favorite Trek series! Well written, well acted, very imaginative stories, and excellent character development. An all around great show!

Besides, I always thought Tom Paris was nice to look at. ;)

I hope there's a follow-up episode, though it's not likely...

9. I've been watching Voyager for a while now
And yes, there is a follow-up eventually. A good one.

I do enjoy it - sometimes its amazingly silly but for the most part, fun. And I do think Janeway is a worthy addition to the Captain's roster.

30. There was a follow-up. *spoiler alert*
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 04:32 AM by Kutjara
The cloned crew forgot they were cloned and set off toward Earth, thinking they were the real crew. The further they got from the demon-class planet, however, the more the structure of the ship and their bodies broke down, which finally made them realize what they were. By this time, it was too late to retun to the Demon planet, so they tried to find the real Voyager, hoping the real crew could help them (perhaps by refreshing their cloned images). In the end, only Harry Kim and Seven were left alive and the ship was collapsing around them, when they detected the real Voyager ahead of them, which they tried to contact.

The scene then switches to the real Voyager, which had picked up the faint distress signal "from an unknown ship." Real Voyager goes to the signal's coordinates, but only discover a dissipating field of strange matter. Janeway makes an entry in the log about an "anomolous event" and the ship continues its journey home, oblivious to the fate of their cloned selves.

It was a good episode with a very sad ending.

4. Plot holes big enough to fit a Borg cube...
Early Voyager was decent, but the Kazons were blatant Klingon rip-offs, Neelix was a totally unnecessary character, most of the technobabble was so contrived and awful that it made TNG's babble look accurate, and after Kes left it became the "Seven of Nine" show.

Plus, for tactical/security chief and a Vulcan, Tuvok sure does get beat up a lot.

7. I agree, the early seasons (1-3) were mostly crap...
I still dislike Neelix, am glad they nixed the Kazon (klingon-wannabes), and technobabble was always a bane of the TNG-era...

And 7-o'-9, why not? :D

13. Sorry, I don't really like Jeri Ryan as Seven.
The whole concept of a "hot" Borg, when it was already well-established that they are essentially genderless when assimilated, bothers me.

And delivering one's lines in monotone for the entire run of the show does not make for a convincing Borg. Maybe if her speech patterns gradually became more human? That was an idea I hoped they would run with.

I stopped watching after about the 10th "the whole crew is missing/unconscious/captured and only 7 of 9 can save them" episode.

What I liked about TNG, as opposed to TOS (even though TOS is my favorite) is that they gave more depth to the secondary characters. I felt Scotty, Chekov, Uhura, etc. were all terribly underused in the show, so much so that Uhura doesn't even have a first name.

Voyager not only got rid of all the stuff that was cool about TOS, it got rid of all the stuff that was cool about TNG. The sense of community was no longer there and each episode essentially became a Die Hard-type story where one character has to save all the others.

17. Nyota Uhuru (sort of)
Nyota
"Nyota", Swahili for "star", is the most quoted as Uhura's first name. The name appears in a Star Trek script from the 1960s, and is mentioned by William Shatner in his book Star Trek Memories.

Nichols says in her second-season Original Series DVD interview that a writer (identified in some books as William Rotsler) asked Roddenberry about Uhura's first name, and was told that one was never decided. The writer suggested the name "Nyota". Roddenberry liked it, but said to ask Nichols before he gave permission for the name to be used. Although the name has not appear in Star Trek canon, in many appearance at Star Trek and other genre conventions, Nichols has indicated that her preference that the character is "Nyota (U)penda Uhura".

Additionally, in "Star Trek II: Biographies" by William Rotsler, Uhura's first name is given as "Nyota", although this book is not canon, either.

11. I totally binged on Voyager a few years ago
My hubby and I downloaded the whole series and watched season after season in order like zombies. I hate the Kes episodes, it's much better when 7 of 9 shows up. They definitely came up with some interesting storylines (the finale is excellent) and Kate Mulgrew is one of those old fashione Hepburn type actresses. How can you not love that voice?

14. The finale has plot holes, but is genuinely good...
Kate Mulgrew was a good choice too. :)

I like many of the Borg episodes, though it's clear later stories throw continuity down the river... the one where there's a hidden unimatrix where all the assimilated show up as their real selves was beyond ludicrous. Nice Queen borg there, but that adds a new continuity flaw that gets put down the river again because of the finale! :D

16. I guess it is hard to keep all of those timelines straight
Even The Simpsons messes up continuity and it pisses me off and they never had any of the time space continium problems of Voyager.

I forgive them because it's more good than bad. I love the Dueling Divas aspect of Janeway vs. Borg queen. I hated the episode when they were involved with some stupid town on the Holodeck. Love Tuvok. Neelix is alright without Kes but in small doses. But my favorite was 7 of 9. I'm disappointed that I haven't seen Jeri Ryan in anything that I would want to watch. I think she's interesting.

32. Seriously.
The holodecks are miserably unreliable. They break down, trap their occupants, randomly confer sentience on fictional characters and play host to all manner of hostile alien entities.

Even the design is flawed. How can "safety protocols" be an active system that shuts off when it fails? Safety should be a default behavior: if something fails, it should fail over to safe mode, not the other way around. That's some pisspoor engineering right there.

No, the holodecks are clearly a GOP-style, porkbarrel, nobid contract sort of system. Proof, I think that Haliburton is alive and well in the 24th Century.

34. Everything's unreliable
I swear, I think Microsoft made that ship.

One hit and the shields are down to 60%. Any little abnormality in the atmosphere of a planet and the transporters won't work. They constantly lose warp power at the worst possible times. The holodecks, as you pointed out, suck. One shot will take out the weapons array (seems a silly design then). The main deflector is offline more than it's on. Etc.

Despite all that, I love it. :P

36. Tim Russ was born to play Tuvok.
He's done guest roles in other shows and his persona is generally the same... but he is more stolid and Vulcanesque in Voyager, which is good... :D He played a cop in an episode of 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'...

I will agree the Janeway/Queen stuff was entertaining and there is nary a single series that keeps its continuity in proper check from day 1 to the final day, so I shouldn't be so harsh... but a little harsh; seasons 6 onward showed little attempt to retain continuity, but by then the claim Q introduced the Federation to the Borg was ruined by retconning 7-o-9's human origins...

Both Borg Queen actresses were very good...

But those Q stories are utterly terrific. Maybe a little farcical with the mating idea, but for some reason I'm not nitpicking against it; the allusion to their own civil war and plight was rather well done...

25. I only saw the first few episodes.
In the beginning the best thing about the series was the opening sequence. That, and I did like Captain Janeway, but the rest of it was just a blank to me. Just when it started getting good, I moved, cancelled my cable, and lost track of the series. Maybe will catch up on it again someday.

I lost track of DS9 at the same time - but from what little I heard about the last few seasons, I'm not sorry I did.

28. It's... reasonably watchable!
In terms of developing intriguing story arcs and complex characters, Voyager isn't competitive with today's TV skiffy (BSG) or even the best shows of its time (DS9, B5). As Ronald D. Moore once put it after he was ousted from the show*, "Voyager doesn’t really believe in anything. The show doesn’t have a point of view that I can discern. It doesn’t have anything really to say. I truly believe it simply is just wandering around the galaxy. It doesn’t even really believe in its own central premise, which is to me its greatest flaw."

However, if you drop in on a rerun, it's a pretty agreeable way to kill forty-two minutes. The FX and design are consistently handsome, Kate Mulgrew is tough and sexy, Robert Picardo is hilarious, and fairly often, the show is just completely batshit (My favorite episode was the two-parter in which a Predator-style race took over the ship and forced the crew to fight in holodeck wargames, culminating in Klingons battling Nazis in occupied France).

Also, Voyager had the best bad episodes of any Trek series outside of the original, such as "Threshold" (Why can't you go faster than Warp 10? Because you'll turn into a giant salamander, that's why).

29. I liked VOY out of all
of the other series'. I haven't seen very many episodes of the first couple of seasons, so I don't have an opinion on them. I thought that the last half of season seven dragged on and on. I'm also of the belief that the last episodes of VOY could have been better, but I'm glad they were able to end it without leaving the whole thing hanging.

I think that Enterprise was the worst ST. The premise was a good one, but they definitely did not pull it off.

31. Voyager was a huge disappointment to me.
I was doing freelance writing in early 1994, and had been pitching DS9. Bob Wolf, the script editor for DS9, asked if I'd like to pitch for Voyager as well. When I expressed an interest, he sent me the series bible and pitch letters.

I fell in love immediately. Deep, rich characters; conflict; subjects worth exploring; and the first major gay character in Star Trek history.

I started puttering around with some stuff, but still had some DS9 stories to pitch first and left my Voyager ideas on the back burner. I figured I'd wait until after the pilot and first few episodes aired in January 1995 to schedule a pitch session.

By episode 2, everything I loved about "Voyager" as originally laid out was gone. In fact, most of it was gone before the pilot even aired.

Gone was Tuvok, the 220-year-old ship's counselor, replaced by a young tactical officer they couldn't even get the rank right for. Gone was the hidden romance between Chakotay and B'Elanna. Gone was the metaphysical aspect of Doctor Zimmer, who was supposed to be a holographic recreation of the dead Chief Medical Officer (Red Dwarf fans can spot the obvious influence there). Tom Paris was no longer universally hated by everyone except for Harry Kim (for reasons that were to become obvious).

Basically, Jeri Taylor and Mike Piller created a beautiful show and great characters, and somewhere along the line someone emasculated everything they had come up with.

I was so disappointed I didn't watch "Voyager" again until the 6th season, and then only when a writer whose stuff I knew and trusted (like Joe Menosky or Bryan Fuller) was penning it. It wasn't as bad at the end as it was at the beginning, but it was nowhere near what it could have been.

not the voyager story itself, but rather the whole federation, romulans, borg, etc... world of the future. the latest "prequel" series star trek:enterprise never really grabbed me. ditto for DS9, although i did like it better in the seasons with worf as a cast member.

with voyager, sometimes only twice a day on spike just isn't enough.
