I thought I hated swimsuit shopping for myself... (A Rant!)
I was out yesterday and decided that I needed to get a new swimsuit for my 5 year old daughter, since she has gained some weight since last summer. No problemo right?

WRONG. I know I only went to one store, but the suits that were available in her size fell into one of three categories.

1. One piece suit with leg holes too big, that the fabric would gape and one could see the "naughty bits".

2. One piece suit with leg holes cut up to my daughter's ears.

3. Two piece with the bottom so tiny that it would not even come close to covering the real estate that MUST BE COVERED.

Now, I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but I hate how our children are being sexualized at such a young age.

:grr::nuke::grr::nuke::grr:

1. They have string bikinis for toddlers.
It is really crazy! DOn't they know that girls shouldn't start dressing slutty until 13!! :P

2. Try LLBean or Land's End.

(I sympathize)

4. Good idea
Only thing I do not like about that is my daughter is difficult to fit (read ULTRA SLIM). I wish we had a Land's End outlet here like we did in Minnesota.

8. My 7yo is ultra slim too - tall and skinny.
Last year she wore a tankini from LLBean, but she'll need a new suit this year. I'm not looking forward to the search. I can't get a one-piece for her, because if it's narrow enough around, it's way too short in the torso.

15. I have the same problem with one pieces for KWgirl
Of course, I have the same problem with one pieces for myself too.

I have two tankinis for me and I love them.

26. This was going to be my suggestion, too
Our daughter falls at the opposite end of the spectrum, but we have similar problems... They have suits in a range of widths, and much more appropriate cuts for kiddos, IMHO!

27. I am amazed at the number of people who just go along
and buy these suits for their girls.

:eyes:

I am actually half considering sewing one for my daughter.

28. I am lucky enough to have a mother who made all my swimsuits.
I always had a custom-fit swimsuit until well into my 20s (for years, my mother had her own business making swimsuits and leotards for teams, and also custom-fit swimsuits for individuals).

17. Who the heck comes up with stuff like that
for 5 year olds????????

Funny thing, I have a pic of me (age 10 something) in a two piece where the top isn't covering my .. ahem ... haven't-appeared-yet body parts  But the bottom covered everything. I better not post that pic here. It might be seen as p*rn :hide:

19. I don't know
but I would like to shoot all the people who go ahead and buy these designs for their daughters. If people would not buy it, it would not be marketed.

I hope the fashion goes back to more cover-up again soon. G-strings don't look good on most grown women either

6. This might have no relevance to your daughter's situation
But I hated buying swimsuits for myself until I started swimming for sport--triathlon, specifically--and looked at bathing suits in a sports-specific store. They're amazing! Practical, un-slutty, no random strings or bows or glitter, and not any more expensive than 'beach-wear' suits. I have no idea if they make sport swimsuits for five year olds, but it might be worth looking into.

11. Costco sells speedos one piece suits for girls
I get them every year for my 10yo. They're great suits, hold up well and totally cover up everything.

Unlike her sister, she doesn't like bikinis. :eyes:

I came home last night and told my husband about the whole ordeal. His response was to say that she was not going to be able to dress like that when she is 30 much less 5. I am thankful that he agrees with me.
