2. One has to think about the state of "mainstream" music at the time
and put themselves in that place in order to gain a proper perspective.

Nirvana came along at a time when the precursors to Britney and the other evil ones were being force fed upon the public, and the people said they weren't going to take that shit anymore. Lo and behold, Nirvana sold millions of albums, and the corporate fucks had to take notice.

It's a different world now, yet in some ways the same. Don't expect another musical revolution to save our ears from the corporate shit.

5. They're still overrated...
the whole "alternative" scene (Black Flag, Hüsker Dü, Replacements, REM, Concrete Blonde, Pixies, etc) was around and making non-corporate, non-suck music before Nirvana came along. Rock music, even in the late '80's and early '90's, wasn't all hair bands and overwrought electro-pop. There IS more than commercial radio out there, and there's lots of good music, even now; listen to corporate radio, and you won't hear anything but mainstream corporate garbage. If you want variety, you need to check out any local college radio stations, or online streamcasts. Because waiting for the corporate stations to play something good for a change will just leave you disappointed.

6. I'm sure they were great if you were between 10 and 17 years old..
when they hit big. Then it probably all seemed so revolutionary and amazing. But they were a right place, right time phenomenon doing something that had been done better as far back as 20 years prior.

13. Yeah, I'm sure from a local scene perspective it was...
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 07:56 PM by vi5
..like any band from any scene getting big engendering some sense of loyalty from local fans. And there were definitely a ton of great bands from that scene. But musically speaking and as far as originality of vision went, Nirvana themselves were more of a marketing success story than they were the musical visionaries that the media made them out to be. There were a ton of other better and more deserving bands from that scene, area, and region who were just simply not as cute and cuddly and marketable as Nirvana.

21. I'm going to have to concur.
I agree that they are way overrated. The whole "Kurt Cobain is the John Lennon of our generation" thing made me sick. Nirvana made being a pussy cool with all the whining and woe is me bullshit in their lyrics. They had some catchy tunes but I think their relevance is completely overstated.
