1. It varies...
But, usually it's some explanation of why I hit the Alert Klaxon.

2. They pretty much always start out, "Matcom has again......."

Nah, I just alert and say something like "Check this out - I think you'll find it worth deleting, or at least watching".

I dont' want to waste the mod's time with extra reading.

3. I've never alerted.
I don't like a thread, I just hide it. I don't like a particular poster, I just ignore them. Simple.

5. That's fine, and many people follow that course. However,
how many times have you (or another) stayed away for a day or two .... and suddenly realized what a task it is to "catch up" on the important issues once back?

Some consider it "ratting", but I don't subscribe to that connotation.
Moderators have to sleep, eat, take routine breaks, and occasionally meet up with emergencies. And, live their daily lives.
Thousands of posts a day and perhaps thirty people trying to keep some order - which is occasionally mandated. When that moderator signs back on, he has the same dilemma you or I have upon returning from a hiatus.
"What's going on? Where do I begin?"

The moderator might be greatly assisted by the accumulated "alerts" which might not have been attended. You see, you're not hurting the poster - who is potentially offending someone - you're helping those who moderate the board. The good of all over one.
The better the board is moderated, the greater likelihood the admins will have time to give us a better site to visit.

I alert the shit out of anyone screwing up the board; Nicely and pointedly I would hope - without writing essays, making duplicitous pleadings or defending my own peeves.

...O...

7. I keep it brief
I didn't alert for my first year or so on the board, but got tired of name-calling.

Usually a phrase, or less. I don't search for quotes. When I alert, it is usually so flagrant that I don't have to say anything, really.

9. I just tell them to read the post
I figure if I have to explain it, it's probably not fair game for deletion/tombstoning.

15. On the rare occasions I alert
I say "please give me this person's address, so I can go bludgeon him with a 7-iron." They never give it to me, though.
