3. Well, they used to think that excessive numbers of pregnancies shorted life span.
Looking at my paternal great-grandfather (thrice a widower) who had 23 children, I think there might be some merit to that theory.

173. From what I can see, there is some debate on that.
Apparently, the stress of vaginal birth on existing HPV lesions may be what raised the risk.

Haven't these folks figured out what causes that YET?????????????? Jeez...go get a vasectomy or something, at least use a condom....WTH?????

These folks live not too far away from I am at in Arkansas. We're not all idiots who want to keep having kids. Hubby and I want 2 kids, that's all. But, I really wonder, what is he doing now to support his family? From what I understand, he wasn't re-elected into office. He was a congressman.

Edit: Jim Bob (yes, that's his name) is a real estate agent and owns several properties around the area where he lives.

Found an article while I was researching. I liked the article and thought I would share. Here's the link: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2005/10/19/notes101905.DTL

Favorite Line: "Note to Michelle Duggar: If God wanted you to have a massive pile of children, she'd have given your uterus a hydraulic pump and a revolving door. Stop it now." LOL....

I'm in that terrible kind of sentiment mood here tonight.

I don't live far from them so I'll probably be toast in the pandemic when it arrives from China brought here by Wal Mart vendors too, so it's not like I'm doing anything but stating a probable reality.

she doesn't raise any of those kids. Apparently, when a child is born one of the older girls is assigned to raise that child.

Not the older boys, mind you. Only the older girls. And the girls also do all the laundy and cooking too.

I'm not sure what the mom does other than walk around and supervise.

I feel horrible for those kids, especially the girls.

16 other sisters & brothers. I wish my mother had a son, it would have been fun & nice.

But I would not trade my sister for anything, we agree to disagree, but we are definitely sisters, I love her so much. My sister is my baby girl.

I have one sister and that's ok with me. The older we get, the more we agree.

you don't make your kids raise your other kids. That's called being a BAD parent.

Babysit? Sure. Change a diapier here and there? Sure. But the vast majority of the work needs to be done by the parents, or they need to stop fucking breeding.

It's a damn good thing they've made a public freak show out of this - hopefully someone will take pity on those kids and help them pay for college, bc we're talking MILLIONS there.

11. This is like some kind of freak show. Dogs generally have smaller litters than that!

Posted at 12:51PM on Feb 8th 2007 by ann

13. I have reservations about this family on a number of levels.

They don't actually *parent* their childrn, apparently, Michelle weans early in order to conceive and as soon as a new baby is born, the old baby is assigned to an older sibling to be raised. It reminds me more of the parenting practices of a social insect rather than something seen in healthy human families.

Jimbob has effectively marketed his children and has bragged on about not being in debt. He has achieved this feat by essentially turning his family into a freak show to be seen by others. Is this *healthy*? Is it something to be imitated?

They also practice somewhat draconian parenting methods such as blanket training in order to get their children to be quiet and obedient. I'd rather have fewer normal curious children rather than 17 zombies sitting on a blanket.

The girls are given no 21st century options for their future, they more resemble women under the Taliban.

I'm sorry, it isn't exactly the largness of the family but a lot of secondary issues that give me pause.

15. What I don't like, other than the names (Joy-Anna and Johannah are just a little too close for me.. and Jinger?!), is that the GIRLS raise the younger children. ONE GIRL does 10 loads of laundry a day. A few of the other girls cook.

What do the boys do? Play with power tools and whatever they want. And from what I've seen, it looks as though this is another family discouraging the girls from pursuing higher education.

Christ on a stick.

Posted at 11:07PM on Feb 8th 2007 by Hannah F.

16. I believe they must adhere to the "quiverfull" train of thought. Crazy, cause this world is full enough. We dont live in a day and age where women MUST care for children, not have an education, and basically wait on their husbands hand and foot. Thats what it seems this family is doing. Raising an 'army' of saints to do what? Make women into slaves and men into robots! Sorry, but it just aint right. Michelle has made herself into the QUEEN bee. She is nothing more than a baby factory. If the other "girls" take care of the babies, what is it that she really has to do? Basically, have MORE babies and pass the buck along to the others in the family. Other than family members, what kind of OTHER social enviroment, other than church, does those children have? Not much!
As I recall, this last baby was posing some problems for Michelle And the baby. If so...what is HER and HIS mind set in having more? What happens if with the birth of this NEXT baby, mom dies? Sorry, they are not thinking.

Posted at 1:39PM on Feb 9th 2007 by angeleea

17. They don't even get to socialize in church, they have "church" in their home (just them and 1-2 other "quiverfull" families) for which JimBob gets a large tax break (although he is not a certified minister). Michelle also homeschools all of them (although she is not a certified teacher - not that one *must* be in order to homeschool, but she married at 17 and has no education beyond high school).

And I agree, it's not the size of the family that bugs me, it's the fact that the gender roles are archaic, the girls must wear clothes straight out of Little House on the Prairie and are not permitted to cut their hair, the older kids are raising the younger ones so Michelle can keep poppin' them out, and Jim Bob (and TLC, apparently) thinks it's so very Christian of him to trot his kids out for TV specials and his own political campaigns, for money and free material goods. Doesn't that make him a PIMP???

They're famous for being super fertile, period. And exploiting their kids. Personally, I find him disgusting and feel sorry for his kids.

Oh, as for the person who wondered about college money - I wouldn't worry about it. The girls will never attend college, and so far the oldest boy is supposedly taking "online" college classes. Jim Bob expressed in the "moving in" special that he hopes they will all marry and build homes on the property. Cult, anyone??

38. God will make them pay for every sperm that can't be found.
But, until then, they can add some more tater tots and processed cheese to the swill they feed their family now.

I watched their documentaries. They seem quaint, misguided, lazy, and sheltered, but not malicious or terribly fundie. I say misguided because she forces her older children to become parentified children. They're in charge of parenting the younger ones. And a few of the older girls do all of the housework and cooking.

good food!!!

The processed cheese, tater tots, chicken nuggets & fish filets are probably a staple.

This just isn't right. Though concerns about the parents' sense of judgement should be obvious, I really feel for the kids. In this sea of siblings, no single one of them will get the direct attention and love that they deserve. Hell, some of the kids are being forced to raise the offspring because their folks can't control themselves.

Michelle's "parenting" reminds me of my sister-in-law. She could stand in the middle of the room and order her 6 kids around and not lift a finger. The kids did everything, including the older ones taking care of the younger ones. SIL also home schooled. Her kids are so backward and socially inept. It is very sad.

"Ah, but this is America, yes? People should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want with their families if they can afford it and if it's within the law and so long as they aren't gay or deviant or happily flouting Good Christian Values, right? Shouldn't they? Hell, gay couples still can't openly adopt a baby in most states (they either lie, or one adopts and the other must apply as "co-parent"), but Michelle Duggar can pop out 16 kids and no one says, oh my freaking God, stop it, stop it now, you thoughtless, selfish, baby-drunk people.

No, no one says that. That would be mean."

Ironically, the eldest children end up rearing the youngest ones.

I would be more inclined to be respectful towards them if it was truly based on free will--but since many christian religions ask that one go forth and multiply, it is hardly based on free will for many, many women.

they're homeschooled (which can be fine but in this instance probably not healthy - mom only has a high school education, married at 17 and pregnant ever since), home-churched, they only socialize with other psycho-fundie families...

Those girls are basically working full time to take care of their siblings. That's so screwed up.

They are being prepared for a future of breeding slavery.

I don't give a crap how many kids you have, as long as you have the means to support them. I was raised Catholic, so I've been around plenty of large families, some perfectly happy and normal, some not. However, if you're going to get paid and earn free stuff for showcasing your family on TV, you've opened yourself to criticism. And frankly, some of the "Christian" aspects of their life squick me out more than a little.

Mostly, I feel sorry for the kids. Especially the girls.

I grew up with a family of 18. All are college graduates. 2 of my great-grandmothers had 20 kids.
I know a lot of folks from families of 10+ kids.

I know nothing about this family in particular but in the recent past families this large were not unusual. Please don't fear the different just because they live differently. Not everyone has to live like you.

on edit, I am not one of 18. I am one of 3. I think I was unclear up there- the family went to school with me.

...medical science and life expectancy wasn't nearly what it is now.

Polio vaccine has been around just over 50 years. Vaccinations in general have been around for not much longer. Antibiotics have only been understood and clinically implemented for a century.

There is something in this story that smacks of "exploitation" and I think that is part of what makes it so distasteful to some.

181. They are free to live however they want.
However, the minute they start whoring themselves and their children on national television for free stuff is the minute they open themselves up to criticism.

Plus, the "buddy system" they practice is awful. Mom breastfeeds for six months, hands the baby off to one of the older girls, and knocks herself up again. The girls, meanwhile, are responsible for dressing, bathing, feeding, and entertaining their "buddy" (*coughchildcough*) while Michelle and Jim Bob go for J44, or however many they're up to now.

That's not being a parent. That's being a uterus with bangs.

93. A funny FReeperism re: the Duggars
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 05:37 PM by Momgonepostal
I was reading another blog where the Duggars were being discussed and came across this gem:

"please give them a break.

I'm a mother and maternal instinks work overdrive. The need to care is very well protraded. Mrs Duggar my hats off to you. Buddy system is a caring and resonable way for children to learn and respect the instudute of life."

http://bunky.typepad.com/my_name_is_mommy/2005/02/the_duggar_deba.html

I have no idea what "protraded" is supposed to be, but "instinks" is one of the funniest things I've read in ages.

much of an obstacle. They named a child "Jinger" after all. And two separate girls Johanna and Joy-Anna :eyes:

That's the lamest thing about large families with theme names for their kids. They ruin out of good ones after awhile and start resorting to made up stuff and bizarro spellings to stay with the theme.

116. Well...
it's not exactly wrong. It's fucking weird for sure.

What I find "wrong" about it is how they do it - their older female children are basically doing Mom's job bc there's too much work for her to do herself - that's not right. Helping out, definitely, but not raising their siblings and having no lives of their own. I also think it's shady how they pimp out their family like some kind of freak show on tv and stuff. Hopefully it'll make them enough money to send those kids to college if they want to go (although I also get the feeling that those girls are not being raised for independent lives).

Also, they're fundie whackjobs so that tends to make a DU-style crowd a wee bit wary lol.

Can't argue with that, but in the same light one could consider ALL parents to be in the wrong, which I don't think is fair - it is natural for living things to want to procreate.

139. This is wrong because the mother isn't raising the children...the
children are raising each other. I was all for the "hey it's their life" point of view until I watched one of the "documentaries" and found out that the older girls become responsible for the younger ones. Not just helping them out, but actually mothering them. Dressing, feeding, caring for them when ill, tucking them in. Everything that this self centered baby machine should be doing.

Yeah, I said it. And they are.

You realize that's less than an hour with each child every day? That's assuming one parent doesn't work, which makes this family poor and on the dole purposely.

How is this NOT approaching child neglect?

153. Well, they're on tv exploiting their babymaking skillz so they probably
aren't poor, but the way they are going about it makes me want to projectile vomit all over my laptop.

And I agree, there is no way to give substantial time to each individual child in this scenario. Mom's been pregnant for most of her adult life - I've been pregnant, you can't do it all when you are, it's just too much. Then add more and more kids every year, and you just spread yourself thinner.

Those kids are raising her "gifts from God" and unfortunately I think this might bias some of them against ever having children of their own someday :(.

143. This is all I could think of!
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,

Because

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.

Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.

Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood!

Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.
God needs everybody's.
Mine! And mine! And mine!

Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaate!

174. I would take the criticisms on this thread more seriously if
people didn't seem to object to their choice of hair and clothing styles as well as food choices at least as much as number of children and child rearing practices.

HAving a large family may not be for you. You may disapprove of having older kids take on family chores or think the older kids have too many responsibilities. What about kids who spend all their time playing video games except for unsupervised Web browsing? What about kids who come home to an empty house every day so they are raising themselves to a large degree (and I realize that is an economic necessity most of the time when it happens. My kids had to do that for a year when I was working second shift and I hated it!)There are a lot more of kids in those situations today, yet somehow people never get excited about them.

Maybe that's why it's more fun to gripe about the clothes... Nobody's daring (or dumb?) enough to say "That's irresponsible, especially in the world in and why aren't people making better choices?"

I dunno what to say. So I'll say how I feel at any given moment. Somebody will always pull the "And who are you to decide" crap, even if I am smart enough to have not indiscriminately bred...

but I guess there's no law against it, just like there is no law against having three kids by the time you are 16 (I teach girls in that position).

But the fact that it is legal doesn't mean it is a good idea.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to live in a place where it was illegal.

184. I don't think anyone would disagree with you there --
but food choices and creepy clothes and everything are part of the bigger picture here. They aren't just a big family -- this couple truly believes that God has directed them to reproduce as much as they can until, I guess, it kills this woman. Her older daughters are not just "taking on extra chores" but raising their younger siblings. The food is unhealthy bc when you have to feed 18 people (soon to be 19), healthy good quality food gets pretty out of reach pretty fast. The clothes are just another part of their whacko fundie-ism, so fair game if not the #1 important thing here.

I'd be all for a large family (though maybe not quite this large) if the parents were doing the vast majority of the work, spending quality time with each individual child, letting the children experience life, taking care of their children's health and wellness, and not raising their daughters to be obedient little breeder-slaves, which is the message they're getting in their current situation.

My mom thinks they are "such a neat" family. I call it complete dysfunction and child abuse. I wonder how many WASP fundies would be all excited about a black or hispanic family having 17 kids? What if they were on welfare? Methinks they wouldn't be so adoring.
