The most offensive Martin Luther King Jr. Day party pictures you'll see this year.

JANUARY 25--Students at a Texas college threw a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that featured attendees wearing gang apparel and Afro wigs, carrying malt liquor, handguns, and fried chicken, and even one woman dressed as Aunt Jemima.

Edit: Changed the subject line to something more noticeable.

:grr:

Edit- Accordine to the asshole on the front page, the party was not meant to offend anybody, yet he rails against being "politically correct." Fuck him.

2. If that kitchen doesn't scream "well-to-do insular suburban hell," nothing does
There comes a point in racism where you just feel bad for how ignorant the perpetrators are.

But very suburban. Feel like I'm back in Park Place estates in St Cloud.

3. Tarleton State has LONG had a problem with white supremecists.
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 05:06 PM by Shakespeare
Way back when I was a reporter at Texas A&M, I covered the college after yet another dustup over their skull-and-bones-ish, quasi-KKK "Purple Poo" organzation (sadly, I'm serious about the name).

How sad to see that things haven't changed much. :-(

Edited to add a wiki link that mentions the Purple Poo (in case it sounded too ridiculous to believe). The "costumes" it mentions are purple KKK robes.

And the pictures of the Purple Poo "costumes" (*cough* KKK robes *cough*)....completely fucked up and weird.

Glad you made it out alive & got back to big D! (I grew up there, went to JJ Pearce HS).

21. I never saw them
I was in labs all the time and in the summers I went to the Moody campus in Galveston for my marine bio. I'm rather glad I didn't know while I was there. I did learn that you never, ever touched the handrails in the Ag building. They all dip snuff and spit it on the rails.

35. There doesn't seem to be any particular geography that is immune.
In the SF bay area there's substantial racism in spite of the overall tolerance, even in San Francisco itself. Out where I live used to be the white flight zone so the subtle racism didn't surprise me but I was surprised at some of the stories I've heard from low income Latino and African-Americans in the city about living there. Weirdly reminiscent of some of the racism I observed in Boston, and frankly the racism level in Boston wasn't as high as that I've seen in some other cities. Places like Kansas City and Phoenix are every bit as racist but don't have the reputation. The other observation I've made is that people tend to be more openly racist in well heeled suburbs than in the older suburban areas and in cities. I think it's because those who live with diversity learn to zip their lips, even if their racism is just as deep.

Found here:

Some snippets:

"featuring fried chicken, malt liquor and faux gang apparel. "I feel like there is no excuse for this type of ignorance"

He must be upset because they forgot the watermelons.

Hey Mr. Elder, call me back with your whiny indignation the day you can convince your fellows to universally abandon the use of the N-word. Until then, you have no "outrage credibility" with me.

31. Two Halloweens ago my sister threw a costume party.
Her best friend from law school came in black face, holding a bucket of chicken, drinking from a bottle of grape soda. He turned to me and said, "Your father would have been proud." I almost punched him.

Let's just say he was ignore by everyone for the entire evening.

36. Holy shit! There's Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity stuff in those photos -
that's my fraternity. One of the first (nationally) to integrate, and quite possibly the most progressive fraternity in the country.

As I look at those pictures, I wonder if it was actually held at a Lambda Chi Alpha house.

If so, I'm writing a letter. That house needs its charter revoked.

Now I'm really pissed.
