My doctor's are driving me insane tonight
Neglecting to tell me the patient's name and just starting dictation, like I'm some kind of psychic who will magically figure it out. Mumbling, talking while eating, coughing directly into the microphone, letting their cell phones ring on and on while they just keep on talking.... I got the whole enchilada tonight with this bunch of assholes :banghead:

Back to the trenches for me :P

2. Oh, you poor thing. Lost in the midst of medical dictation?? I tried that
for about two days because of the high pay. Turned out so poorly they let me go.

Sorry for your pain.

What a problem!

In peace,

5. Yep, though I'm pretty good at it
There will always be THOSE doctors though... the ones that make me want to jab an icepick through my eardrums, gouge my eyes out and rip out my hair

6. I was part of a HMMS (Hospital Management Marketing Society) convention in 1994-95 in San Antonio.

We were trying to publicize and demonstrate radical new software. The programs were to be installed in hospitals and offices that allowed doctors to write up their own medical notes and share MRIs and CT scans. Most of the doctors couldn't type worth a damn and refused to learn touch typing. I thought all those old codgers had retired. I guess not. That company used up all its venture capital and went under.

However, other companies have succeeded where that one failed. Now, I'm with Kaiser Permanente on a new program basis as a senior. My primary doctor is readily accessible to me via email (which is free). He also types his own notes and gives me a copy at the end of each visit. If I lose the paper, I can see his notes in my own member site. It's really convenient and nothing like I've ever seen in doctors' offices even in 2001, when we started with Kaiser.

Of course, my new doctor is probably no older than 35 -- 40 years old. I really feel as if I'm the doctor and he's just taking my advice. Which is OK with me...

7. It's kind of strange
When I first got into this field, I dreaded doing ESL doctors more than anything. Now, however, I've learned that most of my ESL doctors actually TAKE THE TIME to make themselves clear. My favorite doctor is an ESL pulmonary doc. If I could type his stuff all day, every day, I'd be one happy girl.

8. When we were in Boston, we had the same doctor for 27 years.
We had no problem getting through to him via his secretary -- he'd even see you the same day you called if it was an emergency! Fancy that?

The only ESL doctors I have a problem with are the ones who can't pronounce anything correctly in English. Some are better at it than others. Most of them are trying very hard to learn and we try to be compassionate.

9. Yeah, I had one ESL doc who did kidney transplant evaluations, of all things
He was a fellow and, boy, was his English rough. The kicker, of course, is that I'm a perfectionist who'll sit there and figure it out and got pretty good at translating this guy. Now, I'm the only one who does his stuff and, when I see his files sitting there, I look something like this ;( with a healthy dose of :eyes:

10. Sometimes people from exotic places just can't get English down exactly right.
I've heard what I call "medical pidgin" English from the following folks:

Phillipines, India, Thailand, Roumania, Russia, China, Mexico. These were doctors and nurses all over the world that we had to use due to the circumstances, usually Free Clinics or traveling in their countries.

However, I know that these people are trying really hard. It's amazing that ANYONE can learn English as a second language! I'd hate to have to learn THEIR languages!

Good night and good luck... and I hope you have a SPARKLING GOOD DAY tomorrow.
