So, how could the admins make DU even more chaotic and promote even more
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 09:13 PM by Redstone
name-calling and backbiting? (Hey, I'm NOT disparaging DU here, just trying to compile a list of "upgrades" that the admins might want to think twice about doing if the thought ever occurs to them.)

Mine: A "recent tombstonees" list and associated forum where people could discuss the recently-Granite-Chikleted.

Wouldn't THAT one turn into a swamp right away with friends and enemies of the departed going at one another...

1. Oooh, I like that.
Or maybe before tombstoning, they can only access the purgatory forum where they have to defend their DU lives...

That could be fun...

The defending part, I mean. Instead of just taking their lumps and moving on the the next thing.

Although your decision to block was based in anger, the remorse and regret were based in love. (The spanking fell into a deep grey area I pay someone big bucks to help me wade through.)

Magically moot, however, because this evening all is well in the forest. The Block feature has vanished; sequestered in the vault with so many other bad ideas. The shame of being ostracized is back where it belongs: in the petty bickering and massive disagreements in every forum on DU. We are back to our old self.

So, I guess that leaves me no other choice. I'll just have to be satisfied with putting you on ignore.

Come by the KOEB some night soon and kibbitz. :hi:

106. My psychological traumas can once again be buried in a shady thicket!
My ability to openly act-out is renewed as though it were tender leaves of Skunk Cabbage emerging in a darkly joyous, vaguely shameful Spring.

Madness and angst and battering coercion now freed,
shall come Summer all gallop apace midst the towering oaks of my dithering screed.

These wildly bridled steeds
shall again trample and trod and pound the earth
with their terrible, cumbersome, unyielding girth.

*Whew!* What a relief!

:hi: Y'know, I don't get MSNBC, or I'm sure I'd stop onto the KOEB more often. But it would be rude and foolish to ignore an invitation from such a gracious and delightful woman.

Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 10:42 PM by Pithlet
Way back in my parenting board days, I briefly belonged to one where you could rate a poster, and the more positive ratings you'd get, the more stars you'd have, 1 through 5, like hotels or restaurants. It was so ridiculous that many of us started considering it a badge of honor to have fewer stars. That board was a mess to begin with, though. It was amusing to watch someone post something controversial, and see their starts start disappearing one by one, to be replaced in a fury by the other side, then dwindle back again.

61. A few suggestions
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 10:41 PM by Patsy Stone
1) Next to each user name: their verified SAT scores.

2) Once a week, the mods PM you a random user's login and password. For 24 hours, you're them!

3) You can now UN-recommend for the Greatest Page. Look! The my thread has -27 votes! Why do you hate America?

4) You must choose your candidate today. Your user name will immediately change to Hillary1, Clark1, Kerry47, etc. Lower numbers are allowed to publicly berate the higher numbers for "waiting".

5) No talking to anyone whose name randomly appears in red today.

And I think we should seriously consider the SAT score thing. And throw in college GPA, whether that person is a member of Phi Beta Kappa or not, honors degree or not, the whole spiel. Why not put up criminal record while we're at it.

84. I prefer my GRE scores
I could make them part of my sigline or something
680-800-790.
College GPA is not really fair, since I flunked quantum physics which would lower my GPA compared to a mere business major :hide: I mean some people are going to easier schools, taking easier classes, taking lighter courseloads, and others are working jobs and going to school full time.

each person's class rank, major, etc.

And how about income level? Now that would make things interesting around here.

89. I'm probably already too public about that
It's about $10,000, mostly because I am semi-retired at 44. I have argued fiercely with people making $100,000 who insisted they are not rich.
Without an application process though, it's way too easy for people to lie about their edjumacation. "Yeah, I went to Washington University, yeah, that's the ticket."

85. Okay, now we're talking.
1) As long as there's a system for notating things like "my dad said sure, he'd drop me off in Evanston and we'd have a nice breakfast at Denny's on the way, and the traffic on the Eisenhower Expressway was worse than he thought, so I tumbled into my SATs with a minute to spare still sleepy and unfed, and so, what if our PSATs were better?" Or, if no system, then the right to post threads about it, in a FAIRLY moderated forum.

2) If I'm them, how do I know they were them to make me into them?

3) Just cuz.

4) (Is it going to be okay to vote "Democratic" in the election if were not sure yet about the person?)

5)

78. two connected ones
first, a list of instead of the number of posts you have, but the ratio between posts and replies.

second, everytime you reply to a post, you must assign a number between 1 and 5 to the post. anytime a poster gets a certain number of 1s, they are automatically tombstoned.

88. Let me inject a little love into this thread.
I realize that this is one of the best run and best moderated site on the internet today. I appreciate all of the effort that the administrators put into making this a great experience for all posters, and I realize that not all changes are going to be out-of-the-park home runs. I also realize that this site is populated by one of the very best online communities on the entire internet.

That being said, it's been a long time since I've read so many threads with 100+ posts on this site, and enjoyed every one of them. Nuclear ignore might not turn out to be the important tool that the admins initially envisioned, but it's been one hell of an entertaining social experiment. Hell, I'm ready to double my usual donation based on entertainment value alone.

I can laugh the same way I'd laugh when my best friend does something boneheaded, but let's not forget who our friends are.

Respectfully submitted,

deucemagnet

93. A journal that keeps track of tombstoned members
with links to their posts a la the search option--but that way you'd KNOW why they got piped.

Well, I'm not sure that'd make it more chaotic, but I definitely think it'd be more fun!

Whenever someone makes a post, there is a button beside their post.....if enough people press the button, that person is automatically tombstoned.
