Particularly in a youth-oriented culture aging is a challenge. Sometimes I think that God, if there is one, has us age so we are forced to focus on something other than sex, beauty and love. Cruel. :P

Sex is something that changes but doesn't disappear.

the odder this culture seems to be to me. I don't understand exactly why it is that it is assumed that young people have a monopoly or sole entitlement to certain things; anything from dancing in public to sexuality. It is the most bizarre construct, that certain things are 'for the young' including certain forms of social expression. I'm mystified and fascinated by it. I could go on and on, but I won't...I hope this is relevant to your topic, it was just what popped into my head when I read it.

You are not old by any stretch of the imagination, either chronologically or attitudinally (Not sure but,I think I just made up a word!)

Anyway, I work in a retirement center with a full range of residents from independent to assisted living to nursing care. I think of my dear gran who died at 78 and know that was too young. I look at the folks I work with and can only hope that if I live to be old it would be without some of the health issues I see some of them deal with. I think when I get to the point I can no longer take care of my hygeine or control my bodily functions, I will want to check out on my own steam. Or if I begin losing my cognizant abilities. But one doesn't know how one will feel when the time comes. All through life, we all see to accept and make adjustments for the changes in our bodies as they come along. Who knows what will happen?

I think you are right that there are choices - physical, mental, and emotional- that can be made to ease the aging process along.

I agree with you that our current society is very youth-based and youth-obsessed, but I also believe that as the Baby-Boomers enter old age the attitudes will shift to accomodate that growing population. I don't know the exact figures, but there will definitely be a significant increasing percentage of aging, HEALTHY citizens in the years ahead. Life expectancy is increasing, people are much more health-conscious and we're waking up, as a culture to the deeper levels of well-being, too.

Get up at the buttcrack of dawn, take four extra-strength Motrin. Eat a sausage biscuit, washed down with black coffee you can stand a spoon in. Hell, eat two. Take a tub bath, shave, then get dressed to the nines (three-piece suit and tie at least, if not an actually morning coat). Drink a quart of whiskey. Call the local newspaper and GIVE THEM HELL.

Just passing the karma along; we had a 90-year-old gent who used to do the last two on a semi-regular basis when I worked as a cop reporter for the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph.
