2. I had my 30 year old Guild acoustic bass guitar stolen . . .
just when I was starting to get good with it.

Any recommendations for a replacement in the 700 to 1000 dollar range? Might spend more if the instrument is really worth it.

I mainly play bluegrass, folk-y blues-y roots type music. (Neville Bros., Byrds, Allison Kraus, Grateful Dead, Muddy Waters etc.)

$1049 at Musician's Friend, though you might do better elsewhere.

Today's bassist is Dartanyan Brown, shown here playing with Bill Chase circa 1974. Check out his web site at

Note to Jaco fans: there is a great story in here.

5. I've got an Oscar Schmidt
It feels good, and there are very few "dead spots" where the notes don't ring. I tried a Guild (and I'm a long time fan of Guilds), but some of the notes were quite weak, while some of them generated immediate howls of feedback.

The problem with my instrument is that the battery that powers the active electronics doesn't always make proper contact, which means the instrument goes dead from time to time. So, much as I love to play it, I don't take this bass out much.

My gigging axe right now is an Ibanez ATK five string. It's heavy, but I need the exercise.
