When Was The Last New Year's Countdown That You SLEPT Through?
Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 12:53 PM by arwalden
NO-o-o-o... I'm NOT talking about that time you were passed-out-drunk in the corner chair at a frat party.

Instead... what I'm asking is 'when was the last time you had nothing better to do and nowhere to go and you didn't feel like ringing in the New Year, so you just went to bed before midnight?'

For me, the last New Year's that I didn't ring in was about 16 years ago. (1987-1988) Newly single, unemployed, broke, feeling sorry for myself.... "awww-fuckit" was the sentiment of the day.

Even though I still ring in the new year at the stroke of midnight (complete with sparkling wine, funny hats, and noise makers) it's much more LOW KEY and AT HOME. All decked out in warm bathrobes, underwear, comfy slippers. Just me an my partner cuddled on the sofa... and our little dog at our feet. A perfect quiet evening at home.

If there was any noise, I didn't hear it.

13. Me, too ...
11:40. I'm not celebrating at least one more year of Bush, and my son is about to spend it in Iraq. He has to leave for indoctrination tonight.

Thanks, George.

4. The first time I didn't fall asleep before midnight was when I was 7
I was home with a babysitter because my parent's were at a party and I kept expecting some huge explosion, some universal cry of "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" But nothing like that. Truth be told, I was sorta disappointed

12. For the past couple of years, I slept through.
But last night I managed to stay awake long enough to see the ball drop in Times Square.

14. After 30 years of parties, the evening is more sedate
No dressing up. No frantically looking for cabs. No dodging midtown crowds or riding home on the subways at 3 a.m. with sloppy drunks. No more hangovers. Just a clean house, candle light, some nice music and an evening with my sweetheart.

16. It was almost last night
I was actually asleep before midnight, bombed out on Nyquil. But for some bizarre reason Abbie (my cat) woke me up before midnight. I guess he wanted a kiss at midnight

Damn cat....I wanted to sleep!!!!

17. Last year
It had been a busy week and we were so tired we fell asleep by 10:30 or so.

This year we stayed up, but the minute Dick Clark kissed his wife (rather sloppily, I must say) we flipped off the TV and went to bed.

21. I had to get up pre-dawn to make a flight back from Minneapolis
and then it was cancelled, so I had to sit in the airport for five hours.

When I finally got back to my small town in Oregon (an hour's limo ride after a 3.5 hour flight), I had no food in the house, so I had to go grocery shopping in a hurry before the stores closed. Then I had to read the two weeks of mail that had accumulated.

I tried to watch TV, but I kept dozing off and forgetting what I'd just seen, so I went to bed at 10PM and fell asleep almost instantly.

Some time later, I heard screaming outside and a couple of gunshots (it WAS rural Oregon). In my groggy state, I couldn't figure out what was going on.

As the noise continued, I realized that it was midnight and that I was hearing the apartment full of yahoos in the other building of the complex celebrate the New Year.

23. Somewhere in the 70s
When I was a kid and staying up until midnight wasn't "proper". Have witnessed the last 30 or so New Years.

25. Last night.
I did wake up for a moment around 11:45, when the neighborhood was gearing up for noise; earplugs, head under pillow, it worked. I was sleeping peacefully.
