Well, I made it 7 days without smoking. Then I caved. I guess that counts for something.

I suck and I am weak.

There has GOT to be a better way to go about this quitting business. The patch sucks.

1. You don't suck
Breaking an addiction is tough, believe me, I know. Hang in there. Tomorrow is another day.

2. Don't feel defeated.

It means the terrorists have won.

Kidding.

You accomplished something and that's worth a lot. I went from almost 2 packs a day down to 5 cigs a day. For me, that was an accomplishment. You were able to overcome something and that should be chalked up as an accomplishment.

4. The average smoker 'quits'
something like seven times before they make it.

Once, twice, thrice makes you neither weak nor one who sucks.

The people who say "Just do it" have no idea what they're talking about.

5. You gotta think of the patch as "Cold Turkey Lite"
You're still pretty much reliant on willpower, but the patch takes the edge off the physical withdrawal a little bit.

Also, you gotta think of this week as a learning experience. Try to remember what (if anything) helped when you started jonesing badly. Analyze the process that triggered you starting again and think about how you might avoid it next time.

You'll get there.

Who was the great philosopher who said "everytime the wheel goes around, you're bound to cover just a little more ground"?

6. just quit again
try the gum or something.

Seriesly, they told me in health class that people feel like they have to start smoking full time again once their streak ends, but it's better to quit again - if that's what you want to do.

7. Try not to get too frustrated. Give yourself credit for getting that far.
Which is nice and far when it comes to nicotine addiction. Regroup, figure out what you're going to do to make quitting easier, then go for it again. It's better than doing nothing.

8. Each step takes you closer and it's
progress every time you try. I have been "clean" now for 3 months. Took me 4 attempts over the last year and a half. And I a definitely done. You will do this for yourself when you are ready. Best wishes to you Beausoir!

9. You can do this, Beausoir
We all need you too much for you to give up now. It's okay to start over at any time.

Of course, this means I have to bring in the big guns: Big. Daddy.

10. When I quit
I took a different approach than most.

On a day I put on the patch, I resolved to try not to smoke anymore -- and didn't keep any smokes. That said, even if I smoked I considered it acceptable and not the end of quitting. So even if I cheated one evening, I would quit again in the morning.

Since mid July I've had maybe 1/2 pack of smokes, and that's for a former 3 pk/day smoker.

11. Keep trying and you WILL make it.
Take it from me, it is worth it. I have emphysema and have been tobacco free for 17 months now. I can do more this winter physically than I could last year. You really do improve after quitting. Hang in there.
