Music Rant - Lindsey Buckingham
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 03:45 PM by Catch22Dem
So I'm cleaning house all day. I put in my Fleetwood Mac - The Dance DVD and crank the shit WAAAAY up so the windows rattle (it shakes the dust off the blinds.)

I think Lindsey Buckingham is one of the most underrated guitar players of the past 35 years. The man is so incredibly talented and VERY intense. He never really gets mentioned as a "guitar god" though. I think it's a shame. I saw him live this summer. Incredible.

Shame on Rolling Stone for not including him in the Top 100 Guitarists of all time. What a bullshit list that was. No Buckingham and no Steve Vai but they had Kurt Cobain in the top 15. WHAT???? Yeah, Dave Grohl is a better guitarist than Cobain and Grohl doesn't even really play guitar. Rolling Stone must be high.

Happy New Year to all. I have never felt more cynical than I have in the past few days. I don't know what is wrong with me. We could get into a whole thing about that if you want, otherwise tell me what you think about my music rant.

Laters!

1. I completely agree...
His "Out of the Cradle" album in 1992 has some exceptional work that really flew in under the radar.
So does Fleetwood Mac's new album "Say You Will".

13. I'll second the mention.......
......for "Out of the Cradle." One of my favorite albums. He does a lot more hot playing on that one than he ever did on any F-Mac record.

4. Don't care for Vai?
You may not like the sound, but surely you can appreciate the talent.

3. Allow me to be the first to agree...
Buckingham has a unique, distinctive style; beyond that, he's *damn* good.

His method of "frailing," sometimes banjo-style (rather than the usual flat-picking), sets him apart with a kind of wiggly, liquid sound.

He's vastly under-appreciated.

5. Buckingham "Rare On Air"
A series of disks put out by a public radio station in LA...KCRW, I think. They took all the sessions artists did during interviews. The first one has an accoustic solo version of "Never Goin' Back Again" that will blow your mind. One of my all-time favorite tracks by anyone of any style music.

7. Clever and talented guitarist
I'd hesistate to call him "great", but definitely a unique stylist and a very good songwriter.

8. Steve Vai or do you mean Stevie Ray Vaughn?
Anyway, Cobain has to be on the top 100 vocalists. (just kidding)

11. Gotta Beg to Differ
The trouble is, most people who buy Fleetwood Mac albums aren't buying them for guitar licks, they're buying them for good but non-intrusive songs. In Stevie Nicks' shadow, so much got overlooked.

The typical F. Mac song you hear on the radio doesn't inspire, nor is inspired by, the kind of blood and guts that appeal to guitar-heads, so Lindsey gets ignored by them.

I've never been a Fleetwood Mac fan, but I finally got around to repurchasing Tusk on CD (got the vinyl as a Christmas gift back when it came out and sold it in the collection long ago) sometime last year. "Sara" and other stuff may have been the hits, but Lindsey's songs, arrangements & production were the glue that held that thing together and made it brilliant.

15. If you get the chance
Watch him do "Big Love" on the Dance DVD. Just listening to it alone doesn't do it justice. You have to see it too. F-ing incredible. However, your analysis of why he gets overlooked is probably right on! Makes perfect sense when you put it that way.

10. Always liked Lindsey. His finger picking/strumming style is
very clever. To me it always sounds like more than one guitar going on. Don't Look Down is one favorite.

12. Lindsey is amazing
I saw Fleetwood Mac on tour earlier this year when they came to Portland. What a show! Lindsey was astounding. Just watching him play -- and knowing he isn't using a pick -- makes my jaw drop, every time. He was all over the place, running back and forth on the stage, with high energy the entire show (although Mick Fleetwood matched him when he came out with his electronic drum vest).

Here's something funny: every time they played a Stevie Nicks number, some guy sitting behind me would light up a joint. I didn't know you needed to be high to enjoy Stevie's music!

Everyone in Mac is over 50, and I think Mick and John are close to 60, but they have the energy of a much younger band.

16. I think Mick is actually over 60
I saw that show too. That drum vest was GREAT. The whole show was great. The ONLY way it could have been better was if Christine had been there.

18. the rolling stone list was a bunch of crap...
Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 02:38 PM by LastKnight
thier was no criteria or basis of judging that decided the position or even if an artist would show up on the list at all... it was just some journalist's 100 favoirte guitarists.

19. No Steve Vai??
You've got to be kidding! The man who was credited on Frank Zappa albums with "impossible guitar parts" is not on the list. Absurd! But then again, if Kurt Cobain IS on the list, that tells me a lot right there. Just another bullshit list from journalists.

20. and don't forget
On his debut album with Zappa, "You Are What You Is", he is listed as 'Strat Abuse'.

My take is, if you played with Zappa, you're good.
