Need German help.
Edited on Wed Dec-24-03 01:56 AM by JonathanChance
I need help keeping my German fresh over the winter break, so I don't forget as much when I go back for Second Semester German. I just printed out a story on last night's Packer Game from ARD, but I feel that if I don't get some exposure on at least four times a week, I'll forget too much.

2. So start reading the news in German.
German-language newspapers online, from Google directory:

http://directory.google.com/Top/World/Deutsch/Medien/Zeitungen/

Or just go here: http://directory.google.com/Top/World/Deutsch

and do as much browsing of German pages as you can stand.

3. Get a cheap shortwave radio...
and look for the German stations. There's always at least one on.

5. Here
Here are a couple high level German publications online
www.zeit.de
www.spiegel.de

These should be easier to understand:
www.bild.de
www.focus.de

6. Just spend a few minutes each night reviewing the 1st semester stuff.
Pace yourself so that you review the first chapter of the 2nd semester stuff right before the semester begins. You'll be ready to go and have a leg up on your fellow students. (hey, worked for me!)

Also, finding stories from German online newspapers may help.

8. Former language teacher here
If you have a video store nearby that stocks a lot of foreign films, go rent something in German. Two newer favorites are The Nasty Girl (about a girl who investigates her town's Nazi past) and Emil and the Detectives (about some children who catch a thief). You might be able to find The Bridge (about some young teenagers who are drafted in the last days of WWII) or The Tin Drum (from Gunther Grass's novel). Oh, and I almost forgot the most popular German movie of recent years, Run Lola Run.

Don't worry if you don't understand everything.

Also, if your instructor has any experience at all, s/he will realize that you will be a bit rusty when you come back from vacation and will spend the first couple of days reviewing.

However, I'm glad that you're interested enough to want to keep "fresh" over the break. That bodes well for your future success.
