scared and a bit angry, i need a hug
someone tried to break into my house last night while i was trying to go to sleep.

i was lying in bed, reading, when i hear something/one outside my window (I live in a one story duplex and there is a giant chinese elm outside my window. it's ugly but it blocks my window and there is also a lot of other growth on that side of my house, so i hear anything that walks by) and it sounded too big to be a cat.

i hear it stop , start rustling around in the tree and then screwing around with my screen (which is really just the frame with some screening hanging off as the cats tore it to shit) and start pushing up on my window. now, i have (well, had) a big box fan in the window and the blinds pulled down over the top of it so i can't see a thing but i know someone is trying to get in my house.

get out of bed, call 911 and lock myself in the bathroom but when the officers arrive, i don't think they believed me and that was almost as upsetting as the incident itself. i don't know that i've ever been so afraid in my life.

they leave and i don't want to be alone in the house and i can't leave because my roommate took my car to work and all i can say is thank the gods my sister was still up at 3:30 this morning. i've been wanting to have a sleep over with her, but not under these conditions.

i am okay, physically unharmed but still a bit shaken up but most of all, i'm pissed that someone has taken the sense of security i had in my own home. perhaps now is the time to invest in a baseball bat or someother large blunt object.

2. how frightening that must have been
I cannot imagine! I'm glad you're safe, sorry you're shaken. Is it possible to get some of that tree cleared away from your window? Perhaps a sensor light outside too would help.

I hope your day goes better !

4. hi aA
thanks for the hug. i can clear everything away myself, but i like the extra privacy it gives me. silly me thought it would keep people from screwing around with my windows (my house is set about 100 feet off the steet).

5. Oh honey..that is frightening.
I've been there so I understand both the fear and the anger. The suggestions I received at the time were to have good lighting, keep growth, plants, trees and bushes that may obstruct view away from the house/window areas.

There are window locks you can get to allow your window to open only so far..enough for air but not enough for an intruder. If you can't locate those, a nail will also work..driving it partially in just at the top of the raised window. I don't use box type fans..we only have one that can mount into the window and be affixed so that the window can not be slid up and the fan removed. It's the same with window air conditioners..they are all fully secured into the window frames so they can't be pushed in or pulled out.

I do keep a baseball bat in my bedroom..as well as a police sized flashlight.

You may want to discuss what happened with your neighbors. They may know things that haven't been reported to the police. When it happened to me, I mentioned it a few months later to a neighbor I'd just met. She'd had the same thing happen to her around the same time.

6. OMG! How scary.
And I am surprised that the officers were skeptical. Typically they say to call . . . better safe than sorry. Glad to hear that you are okay! Sending big to you. Please stay safe.

If you're female and alone in the house, it has to be your imagination.

If you're male and alone in the house, you get 'what's the big deal, you're a man you could have handled it on your own'.

8. Dude, that must have been so scary...
I'm glad you're ok and physically unharmed, but feeling unsafe in your own home really sucks.
