Record Opening for Rings Finale

The final film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy has set a US box office record for a film released on a Wednesday.
The Return of the King sold $34.1m (£19.2m) in tickets in the US and $23.5 (£13.2m) in the rest of the world.

The Rings finale, which has been widely praised by critics, beat the record held by Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Elijah Wood, who plays Frodo, has said now that the final film is released he expects "a certain feeling of sadness and separation anxiety".

"We're going to have to arrange something for next year to bring us all back together," said Wood.

The overall one-day opening record of $39.4m (£22.2m) is held by Spider-Man, followed by The Matrix Reloaded with $37.5m (£21.1m).
