2. The Humbug bug has struck hard in the McLargehuge household
mostly because we're friggin broke this year. I am awaiting a bonus from work so I can buy my son some Hot Wheels cars, but it doesn't look to be forthcoming.

Still. We have a tree, eggnog, friends, and our health.

3. I work in retail
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 10:26 AM by Finnfan
I hate, HATE this time of year. I'm on six day work weeks, so I rarely spend any time with my family, and I'm exhausted when I do get time with them. On my days off (I only have one left in the last 12 days before Xmas) I have to - you guessed it- GO SHOPPING!

Please folks, when you are out shopping today, think of the poor people in retail who do not get to enjoy this season.

5. I still haven't really figured out...
...what "holiday spirit" is. My mind has a problem digesting the concept that just because Earth is at a certain place in its orbit, certain "spirit" is supposed to pervade my consciousness.

6. full "Bah-humbug" mode
Actually it's nothing new for me but this year has been worse than ever.

I took a part-time/seasonal job as a credit agent at a Catalogue Gift call center. There is NOTHING that will sour you on the season more than telling 80-100 people a night that their credit has been denied and their orders aren't coming.

11. I rarely have the holiday spirit...
My Dad died 8 years ago after being sick through the holidays. My mom died 3 years ago after being sick through the holidays. My ex husband never gave a crap about the holidays, so I never had any sweet surprises like my friends did, so I generally downplayed it. I've only ever had one Christmas with an S.O. who did anything special for me. No kids to fuss over.... I just seem to have lost my holiday cheer as an adult.

Unemployed, no money, no prospects, bored, broke, and with the Hounds of Hell calling me on the telephone to get me to pay them money I 1) don't have, and 2) don't owe.

Merry fuckin' Defaultidays, tout le monde.

BAH HUMBUG!!

14. I almost never do.
Maybe it's the fact that we don't get winter weather down here. Maybe it's the fact that I don't have a large family that only sees one another on holidays. Maybe it's the fact that I can't stand all the over-commercialization. I dunno. I do know that I am looking forward to my time off from work, but I don't like that holidays will intrude on that time somewhat.

No not yet. Far too much going on.

Usually I am all about the Christmas spirit but not yet this year.

16. I'm getting a sore throat for Christmas
It's a holiday where your supposed to freak out and buy a bunch of stuff you can't afford for people who don't want it. What's not to like?

Bleah.

19. I had it early on when I bought my presents
I try to do my buying well before mid-December because I know by this time of year my light-deprived self is going to be in a funk. I go home and turn on the tree dutifully and I give out the Christmas cookies. I'm good at going through the motions.

I bought a lot of stuff for my mother that she needed anyway because she's retired on a fixed income, so I use this time of year to try and help her out. Everything is wrapped and under the tree.

I'm going to see ROTK this weekend, that's my Christmas present to myself. Also this will be only the second sober Christmas of my adult life. That's the good part. I'm actually a lot happier than usual, or at least a lot more awake.

But I can't wait for the days to start getting longer again.

21. I rarely get much of it
There have been too many bad events in my life connected with the season. Although I am not religious I was raised Christian and hate the commercialization of what should be a deeply spiritual holiday Christmas.

I plan to send a few dozen emails over the weekend and maybe even a few actual cards. I've given a few gifts, have a few more to give and a couple of obligatory ones to buy but that's it.

No tree, no lights, no decorations. I'll clean up my house and have a few people over for leg o' lamb on or around December 25. Or maybe I'll make it the 23d and call it Festivus.

23. I'm in retail - my holiday spirit died long ago
Now I equate the holidays with crabby people, aching feet and a sore back from gift wrapping and shipping.

P.S. The next guy who sings "Jingle Bells" around me is going to get his ass kicked.

25. I'm in medical procedure hell.
Every day off I have to have a new invasive test done, and each time something new and horrible is discovered to be wrong with my body and another test is scheduled. So I have no time to shop. Plus, I'm worried.

Just one year I would like to have both money and time, so I can buy gifts for my friends and family and enjoy being with them.

This whole year has pretty much sucked!
