There are 1,000 US Sailors and Marines in Victoria right now.

The USS Lincoln (aircraft carrier) is anchored off-shore for four days, and the 3,000 crew are on rotating shore-leave.

I'm (always) amazed by how young they look when out of uniform. How can I tell which ones are with the ship?

1) African Americans. Those that have been here will understand this; Victoria BC is the whitest city in North America.

2) Good haircuts.

3) groups of teenagers wandering around, and none of them are on cellphones.


The reason for this post is because I want to remark upon how well-mannered and polite they all seem to be. I've chatted with a few of them (steering away from politics for once), and they're a very respectful and well-behaved bunch. If you're a parent of someone on the Lincoln, I tip my hat to you... good work!

The mixing pot is one thing I really REALLY miss about not living in Vancouver.
