GOD I love him!

Even though James Lipton comes across as the smarmiest most self-important prig on the planet, I watch because I love the interviews. I love actors and movies and I like this show.

But I effing adore Dustin Hoffman.

This was a great show tonight.

1. Simply the Best. How he was motivated to do Rainman Scene
by his "acting impotence" was hair raising and a deft description of why this business is not for everyone.

3. this is silly, but.
"Tootsie" before he meets up with Jessica Lange, really impressed me. Not the acting parts but all the scenes with Terri Garr just really touched me because he is so human, and she is, too. I almost wish they had made that a separate movie, the interaction between him and her, before the other parts of the movie, which are gimmicky in comparison. Who would have thought that someone with his physicality would have such amazing charisma.

4. perhaps it's the most physically "unattractive" among us who make
the deepest impression, even turning out sometimes as better actors.

Look at Linda Hunt. I don't know if she is technically a little person, but she is tiny, and not physically beautiful. I find her to be an AMAZING actress.

Roles that come to mind are as a judge in "The Practice," as a saloon keeper in "Silverado," but most especially as a photojournalist in "The Year of Living Dangerously" -- for which she won the Oscar.* Her competition was

Cher, "Silkwood"
Glenn Close, "The Big Chill"
Amy Irving, "Yentl"
Alfre Woodard, "Cross Creek"

!!!

 end appreciation rant . . .

* the only Oscar ever for a portrayal of a member of the opposite sex

5. Not just a great actor but an absolutely awesome human being.
I fell in love with him when I saw The Graduate, and he just gets better and better.

7. I think we were all in love with Benjamin back then. Then we had to

adjust to his offbeat choice in roles for awhile and learn to appreciate him for the phenomenal actor that he is. I can't remember a film that he "phoned in." He's always given a great performance. From someone I know who's met him, he's just very down-to-earth and genuine in "real" life, too.
