MSNBC is showing their attempts.. It "almost flew" but fell into a mud puddle.. They will try again :)

How ironic..

1. It just goes to show ...
how difficult a feat this was.

The WB did not have the luxury of modern technology to confirm what they believed. They did not have the manpower that this project includes. They did the work in their spare time (They still had to support themselves as well as their vision). This does not even address the risk that was involved.

Cheers
Drifter

3. Probably because the wind conditions are not correct.
The Wright Brothers required brisk wind conditions to assist getting the flyer off the ground.

http://www.wrightexperience.com/news/belfort.htm
"The DigiWx system clearly meets our needs for closely monitoring the wind conditions both here and at Kitty Hawk" stated Ken Hyde, founder of the Wright Experience. "Both the 1902 glider and the 1903 Wright Flyer were highly susceptible to variations in wind conditions and it is critical that we monitor this variable closely at the precise location of our flight operations" Hyde continued.

10. Nice altered photo
of John Young of Apollo 16.

The Earth isn't visible in the original, as it is, you've got it backwards and in cresent phase. It was just over quarter when they landed.

8. Yes it was really done on a Hollywood sound stage
and the pictures were sent around the world by an evil syndicate formed by the swizzle stick and peanut consortiums.

6. yeah, it crashed and broke up a couple of weeks ago too during a test
i know a guy who's building a model of the wright's first military plane for a museum somewhere in the dc area. took 6 years after their first flight to build that one, but only because they were trying to protect their patents. a whole lot of copmanies went around them, but they still died millionaires, which ain't bad.

he's having a hard time building it cuz the wrights hid their plans, so there's lots of guesswork.

7. That's the only reason I'm glad I didn't make it dewn to NC today
For 6 months I have been planning a trip to be there today...and fly one or more of my nice kites.

Oh well...couldn't find an affordable room within many miles....so I didn't go.

The high point was to be the re-creation of the first flight....but since it failed (and since it was so rainy this AM), I don't feeel that bad about missing this once in a lifetime opportunity.

9. It was probably because the nor-easter winds were pretty
bad - but it could have been because of the bad karma of * being there.

11. Wasn't it just wet?
I mean, all that canvas getting dribbled on all morning... wouldn't that add up to enough weight to kinda make the thing too heavy?
