Is age 11 too young for An Inconvenient Truth?
A few other posters have written that their kids were very upset by the movie, believing the world was about to end. (Well, that may be true, but...)

So, is an 11-year-old going to have nightmares from this movie?

1. No.
I have a 10 year old and a 14 year old. I'd have no problems with either of them seeing it. I'd suggest a discussion after though.

Will you be checking the sheets?

4. I saw it last night and some of the
details can be disturbing (he talks of polar bears drowning because they swam 60 miles to find another piece of ice). That being said, these are themes that are found in many "children's" films.

I think it should be fine. Just be aware, and inform the 11 y/o that there may be parts s/he will find disturbing. That will help. IMHO.

Peace

9. Depends on the child. Seriously.
However, I might be inclined to say age thirteen... although this movie has been rated PG.

10. We're talking about "breeding" age, not Bible-reading age.

I don't believe in the Bible, anyway. Sorry, I must have missed your point.

14. Well, these are generalizations and I'm not going down that path.
I wouldn't take my eleven-year-old granddaughter to see that movie.

That's because -- she isn't eleven yet, she is only eight.

Generally, this topic might be appropriate for SOME 11-year-olds. Each individual situation should be evaluated on its own.

23. Sorry should've elaborated :)
It was a positive experience. I'm sure it wasn't the most Fun he's had at a movie :) But he understood much of it and got the message and did not come out scared.

However, it certainly was far from his introduction to environmental concerns. The wilds is where he and I spend our quality time and he's had 10 years of listening to me talk about the importance of our environmental responsibilities and the beauty of the wild places and he's seen much of that beauty first hand as well.

And of course some of the details were over his head but as I say he understood the message well and I as I always do whenever I talk to him about the threats to our environment after the movie I talked to him about how no matter how bleak and challenging things look for the future there is still only one way to live your life happily and that is to be active and do what you can. Even if it's too late to save some things or stop some environmental breakdown we (or more importantly he and his generation) can at least do what they can to reduce suffering and perhaps reduce the time for recovery.

As long as there's life there's hope - the young at least need to believe this.

16. Hell, take the kids. They might not understand it all, but I don't think
it will hurt. If anything, it might actually help some (or the kid might just be bored and indifferent)

22. I don't think so. I was just a few years older than that when I
read Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". It worried me, but from that time one, I have been aware of the impact that humans can have on our environment, both good and bad. Maybe you could discuss the environment and global warming and such for a bit before you go.

24. Thanks for input. We've decided to wait until it comes out on DVD
and then watch it as a group - adults and kids together, discussing the matter.
