What's wrong with this conservative?
I know many of you think that I just answered my own question.... BUT the commie and I met this guy last night at the pool who said that even though he agrees with this admin. on many things he prefers the company of liberals.... said most of his friends are liberals.
He plays bluegrass. He said liberals read books, like good food and movies..... tip well. Conservatives, he said, may be right (in his opinion) on many things but they are an uncultured lot.

can he be turned? he was about......50. The commie says "no."

1. Did you ask him why he was still conservative? Is he opposed to progress?

7. One of my parents is racist but I am not. So one can always over
come their upbringing. *shrugs* he may one day join the light. :)

2. He sounds like the old school form of legitimate conservative
And not a freeper.

Could be a good time to let him know that the party he used to think of as Republican doesn't exist any more, and that he'd actually be better off in the Democratic Party, since we're the budget balancers, fiscally responsible, and economic driving party.

(I'm assuming that he's the old school money kind of republican; which truly has moved over to the Democratic party)

3. Someone who is 'conservative' and educated
often are truly very liberal in their views, meaning that they're interested in discussing new idea but they are cautious.

The key to "turning" people like this...and I don't know that you could really turn them into registered dems for the most part but you can I think demonstrate to them voting for the current crop of repukes is against their own beliefs...so the key is to show them that even by traditional thinking conservative standards the current admin sucks and even on the issues he thinks he agrees with them I'll bet if you dig down to how he sees those issues you could show him that the admin is just paying lip service and don't really share his position or have failed miserably.

That's how it went with me and a couple of conservative friends of mine from NH during the 2004 campaign.

4. Sounds like a decent fellow
Why does he need to be 'turned'? Vive la difference.

5. You kind of have a point
I'm a former conservative myself, but didn't like (and still don't) the company of small-minded people. On most issues, I was just barely to the right. On others, I was way left of center. I suppose I considered myself a conservative because of the strong right wing influences in this part of the country. You just don't meet many liberals here.

I wouldn't try to change him. He's already teetering, and there's a good chance he'll fall on the left side of the fence... though I can't understand why Bush hasn't shoved him there by now, as he did with me and many others. Maybe he's not the type to admit he was wrong about anything. Once you've taken a stand, it's hard to say you were wrong.
