Poll question: Who do you think is Deep Throat?
My gut reaction has always been Diane Sawyer--the reason is that in the book, The Final Days, Diane is only mentioned once--it's like they're going out of their way to NOT cast suspicion on her. She certainly knew enough to be the source.

8. Lots of theories, and Woodward and Bernstein say they'll never tell
until Deep Throat actually dies. Nobody's really been able to prove anything, and probably will never be able to.

11. That was one of the finalists in an investigation by a group of students
So it got a lot of attention. The group actually followed through and concluded it was someone else (and I'm an idiot for forgetting the name and bringing this up). But it was guesswork, though educated guesswork. I don't think they ruled Buchanan out, just expressed a higher probability that it was the other guy.

6. Pat Buchanan
He knew where the lies came from. He knew the truth. He was "honorable" enough to know that hastening the end to the nixon white house would keep his sorry career afloat. In other words, he was in a position to go down with the ship. Being a good conservative, he took care of number one.

Ok, actually no I don't beleive that, but he was in the right place at the right time, and I'd like to think he had a conscience, even though he seems to be defending Nixon to the very last.

He was told what he needed for the task at hand; he probably "knew" nothing, if that makes any sense.

44. it was partially a joke
I have heard his name mentioned previously in Deepthroat conversations. It's possible, but he's a constant appologist for Nixon, so I doubt he's that one that brought Nixon down.

13. Poppy Bush
He needed Nixon out of the way before he took the whole party down. That way they could recoup by the time he ran for office in 1980.

31. From what I've read,
Reagan didn't connect well with people one on one on a personal level. I think he went through life "acting" and did better with playing a role in front of a group. I don't think he had much emotional depth, look at his relationships with his children. In some ways, I feel sorry for Nancy, I think living with him would have been lonely. Just my opionion, not that I'm qualified to analyze psychological issues.

32. Interesting, and again that goes against the image they tried to
project for him--you know, someone's funny uncle who you wanted to be around.

He also had absolutely no intellectual curiosity (remind you of anyone?) and so I can imagine he didn't get involved in the little small talk, like asking someone how they were--he probably didn't even care!

14. Hal Holbrook... I don't think Deep Throat really existed.
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 06:54 PM by elperromagico
I'm inclined to believe that the Woodward and Bernstein Deep Throat was a composite of various Washington insiders, added to the book to give it added excitement. The image of a single man bringing down Nixon is a great dramatic device.

16. Fred Fielding
"Deep Throat" is Fred Fielding, a lawyer who was first assistant to John Dean, chief counsel to President Richard Nixon, at the time of the Watergate break-in in 1972,
Among his positions since Watergate, Fielding was the chief counsel to President Ronald Reagan for five years, served as a member of the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney transition team, and currently is a member of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks,
Meaning shhhhh!!!, he can't talk about Watergate yet, he is busy making a living.

publically stating that they were deep throat, you have to look beyond the first tier and how they could have gained...ie. Fred Fielding

17. perhaps
Kissinger---maybe that was the reason he was called 'deep throat', who in actuality despised Nixon and would have loved to see him go down.

Pat Buchanan---the man is essentially honest, even if you disagree with him. I see him being embarrassed about all of Nixon's illegal activities. Besides, Nixon was way too liberal on many social issues for the ultra conservative Buchanan.

Or perhaps it was more than one person, but to simply the secret channels and to protect their witnesses, W and B made up a charecter.

Watergate became a real news story.

But Martha is dead, so you'd think that Woodward and Bernstein would have said it was her.

I saw something once about a professor and his grad students who did a long term research project on this and all pointed to Buchanan. I remember at the time the arguments seemed to make sense.
