Bathtubs VS. Showers- an informal survey
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 10:29 AM by Kashka-Kat
I have a 2 flat. The downstairs apartment needs a new bathroom. Due to size and position of window, it would be difficult if not impossible to fit in a full size bathtub w shower. A nice big clawfoot tub without shower would fit in under the window. Or, a full size shower stall would fit in the corner. But not both bathtub and shower.

Question: which do you prefer, baths or showers?

Would you rent an apt. which had a shower but no bathtub? How about bathtub with no shower?

I love love love big claw tubs-- you can lounge and relax and by soaking you do get cleaner.

But Im thinking I should make the tenant happy and not me.

Also indicate if you are F or M or other -- have heard that baths are usually a F thing, and showers an M thing. But I wonder how strong a correlation that is.

THANKS for your help!!

2. Shower, but
I don't understand why you can't run a shower head over the tub.

Regardless of gender, I'd say shower. Soaking in a tub isn't necessary--hopping in the shower before work is.

3. Huh? If you have room for a tub, you have room for a shower and tub.
I don't understand your binary thinking here. I had an apartment with a giant claw tub, that had a shower head attached to it, and a shower curtain that went all the way around. It worked fine. I don't see why you feel you can't do that?

But to answer your question, I am a male, and showers are for getting clean; bathtubs are for soaking.

One cannot get clean in a bathtub, because one then sits in dirty water.

Shower first, then bathe.

4. I would never live somewhere without a bathtub
but if you can fit in a tub, you can add a shower. The shower pipe will be oddly placed, but it's doable.

5. To answer your question, just a shower if there's only one choice.
Regardless of whether your tenants like to take a good long soak in the tub or not, most will want the convenience of quick shower.
I do agree with others who can't understand how it is that there's no room for a shower head if there's room for a tub. I've been in many apartments with old clawfoot tubs and tubular shower surround rods. Most even have a window adjacent to the tub. Most aren't all that attractive but they do offer the flexibility.

6. Nope, just the 2 choices- hey stop thinking outside the box you guys!
For survey purposes, its just the two choices.

Shower curtains over wood windows-- yuck! Great for growing bumper crops of mold-- as the current tenant can verify. Nice big black blotches all over. Yes there are high cost solutions but I'm wanting to see if I can save a few bucks-- no not cause Im a slumlord but so I can spend more money on the KITCHEN which has its own set of problems...

The question is would you absolutely not rent if there was only one or the other. Would it make or break the deal. Assuming rest of apartment was to your liking.

10. I don't understand why you can't do both
I would really want a tub, but I would have to have a shower. If I didn't get both, I wouldn't rent the apt. If you want to put in a stand alone claw foot tub, you can add the shower & have a circular shower curtain rod that closes the whole tub in so the window won't get wet at all. If you are doing the work, you should do both.

18. so if you put a shower in
what happens to the window? Are you going to close it up or replace it? Maybe I'm confused, but it sounds like the window will be affected regardless of what you put in.

20. i think you're dismissing it too quickly
i lived in an apt with a claw foot tub, with a shower that was buy an old wooden window and nothing happened. If mildew is a huge problem in your bathroom you need better ventilation.

7. Showers are more water efficient
However, there are times I just want to soak in a tub, but when I do that I usually shower first and then fill the tub since I don't want to be soaking in my own dirt

9. We're seriously considering taking out the tub
and going with a high-tech shower. We haven't taken a 'bath' in years and the space taken up by the tub could be put to better use.

12. Some showers have a deep Japanese style soaking tub included.
So, it takes up the room of a large shower but it can be used as a small soaking tub as well. Just a thought.

19. Showers have it
Kind of suspected that.

You shower people are funny-- stewing in your own dirt indeed! Since baths get you cleaner (bc of the soaking) there's not that much crud that comes off you. If I get dirty in the garden or something I hose off before filling the tub. I once lived in a shower only apt. for a while and was APPALLED at how much crud came off when I finally got to take a bath. Try washing your dishes by just running water over them and see what I mean!

But don't mind me--just trying to stir up some controversy on a boring afternoon :)

21. I'm not sure, I don't bathe myself
The girl I'm with washes me so it's sort of a shower and a bath. Generally I'm sitting against one end of the tub and she's washing and scrubbing me with the soap and the hand shower. Oh, and of course there's a happy ending.

22. SHOWERS!
I am female, but even my husband agrees on showers......

When we built our house, we were told that the city required one tub.....

So we have one....I used it once, to make sure the jacuzzi works, which it does...

And haven't set foot (or body) in it since....

23. I would prefer shower no tub to the alternative; female.
I became addicted to showers in my college dorm days when we had blasting showers with endless supplies of hot water.

A tub soak is nice on occasion, especially if I have an achy body due to exertion, flare up of fibromyalgia or illness. However I opt for shower 99% of the time. I shampoo my hair daily so shower is essential, and it is my wake up for the day..I shower before I have coffee.

My husband prefers tubs.

You know you can put in your big claw foot tub with the pipes etc for the shower and put in one of those old fashioned circle shower curtains to contain the water, and have both.
