This question was prompted by someone talking about phone jockeys that degrade you into paying up.

1. Someone's gotta call
The people that do it though are sometimes overtrained.

My friend moved into a place and kept getting calls for "Gertrude"

She explain, "This isn't Gertrude's number anymore." THey always said "Oh really okay, well could you give her a message for me?"

SHe say, "I don't know Gertrude, I've never met her this isn't her number"

Again they answer: "Oh okay, well if you do see her...can you tell her to call us"

3. The stupid thing is....
...they send you mail to tell you. They should not need to hound you to death.

2. I dunno... what is their purpose?
Other than to make you feel like something beneath pond scum for being unable to pay a bill?

I mean, you either have the money or you don't right? How many people actually go around racking up debt with the MO of ripping off the credit companies? Unless you're a professional identity thief I'd say the percentage is mighty small. And then, we're talking about criminal investigations and not debt collectors. I can't figure out how annoying calls and mailings from collection agencies are somehow going to make it easier for someone to pay money they didn't have to begin with.

The point I was trying to make in that other thread is that if the collection agencies aren't even able to recover enough of this bad debt to make a profit on it, then we KNOW things have gotten bad.

5. you need to turn it around
I was hassled two years ago for tuition I never intended on paying because the universite went on strike and they tried to make me pay for a semester that never happend.

When they called I just had fun with them, I would call them back and leave messages for my "agent" demanding he call me back, I tape some of it for shit's and giggles.
Still crack up when I hear it.

4. Here's a good website dealing with this type of thing
http://www.budhibbs.com

He is a talk show host on KRLD in Fort Worth, TX. He has some really good ideas about credit and collection.

6. Hey, with the prison overcrowding, they DO sometimes
have to let out brutal rapists who specialize in sodomizing 4-year-olds and nursing home residents.

What's a guy like that goin' to do in the free world? He doesn't want to go back to jail, right?

Collections is PERFECT. Personally, I don't begrudge the vile, putrid filth (filth that makes santorum look almost edible by comparison) a job.

8. I pissed them off
I was being harrassed after I separated from my wife. My cards were blown out from her medical bills, and shopping sprees, so the week after I moved out I went to Consumer Credit Counseling Services (They suck, IMO -- You're better off going chapter 13 -- you end up doing it anyways if you use them...)

One card, despite being paid, kept harrassing me and wanting more a month, yet they refused to talk with CCCS. likewise CCCS refused to talk to them. So basically, i had a card wanting more money, and a service that was supposed to negotiate with them who wouldn't speak to one another...

They start off by saying "The purpose of this call is to collect a debt and all infomration obtained will be used to do that".

When the calleer refused to confernece CCCS in to our call, I pointed out she lied, because if all infomration obtained would be used to collect the debt, then she would, in fact, use the number I provided to clear the situation up.

Well the long and short of it is that we spent about 10 minutes going around and around with me the entire time pointing out the contradictions of her statements and actions.

She was sooooo Pisssssssed!

I don't think we talked about the debt after the first minute. I don't they are typically put on the defensive in that way. It was nice to return the harrassment.

The long and short of it is that they eventually sued me, and i was forced to take a chapter 13. They now get a $.25 on every dollar for their efforts instead of the full amout (w/ interest) I was trying to pay them.

Stupoid Bastards.
