RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - A nine-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in Brazil's western Amazon jungle, a pregnancy that was the youngest on record and may have been the result of rape, authorities said Friday.

"There is no registry of any other Indian girl getting pregnant at such a young age," said Luiza Mello, spokeswoman for the National Health Foundation, which has been responsible for Indian health since 1999

The girl went into labour on Thursday. The baby, weighing 2.2 kilograms, was delivered by Caesarean section and reportedly was in good health, said Daniele Santos, a representative of the Indian Bureau.

there are girls (typically) who sexually mature way ahead of schedule. It is a condition called precocious puberty...

even if she had early onset puberty (which is most likely the case since she conceived a child)...adults around her would have had to have known that she was too young...so you have to wonder...what the hell happened...and is she even old enough to know and be able to give enough evidence against the perpetrator

Even in the extremely unlikely event that a girl that young has started menstruation, the baby and probably the girl would never survive the pregnancy process.

My sister works with pregnant women and she has had 10 year olds come in who are sexually active. She probably only "survived" because they did a cesarean.

But a five year old? I know there are disorders that cause very early puberty, but I just can't see a baby surviving in a body That small and undeveloped long enough for even a cesarean.

I mean the full-term baby is almost half the height of the full grown 5 year old mother. There just is not room for that. Unless the mother grows in height as well as sexual maturity, I guess then it would be posible.

i have seen pictures of folks with tumors that should have killed them...just the weight alone was enough to crush them...but they managed to survive longer and somtimes got surgery...

I have seen almost anorexic women carry pregnancies...

So if a 5 year old with early puberty...(which means she would be taller than the average 5 year old typically) got pregnant..her body would adjust.....

There are little people (dwarfism) who have normal size children and carry pregnancies to term......height isn't a requirement for gestation...
