Anyone Out There Still Love Peanut Butter and Jelly?
Even after all these years that is still my favorite sandwich.

If I had to choose one thing to eat on a desert island I think it would be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I wonder if that could be genetic.

15. yum!
I like crunchy peanut butter, but creamy will do just fine if there's no crunchy around.

But, I don't like the sugar/salt-laden Jif/Skippy etc anymore. I'll get all-peanut, no additives, peanut butter at our health food store or sometimes our grocery store will carry a few jars of the peanuts-only peanut butter. It's too sweet for me now otherwise.

I was spoiled - living in NYC, there was a store in the village where you could get fresh dates and fresh, just-crushed peanut butter to dip the dates in. Food of the gods, I tell ya.

As for the topping, sometimes honey is good, but usually I'll go for orange marmalade, red raspberry preserves, or some other jelly (not strawberry or grape).

Had a pbj sammich last night! Yum!

19. Peanut butter recipe:
It's so bloody easy to make, I'm stunned it took us so long to come up with it.

225 grams dry roasted peanuts (or 2 cups peanuts that you have toasted in the oven with some salt)
100 to 200 grams honey
1 food processor, blender or electric chopper.

Grind the peanuts in the processor with short pulses until pasty. Drizzle the honey in, a few grams at a time until it reaches the consistency you like. Add coarsely chopped peanuts if you like it chunky.

Also works with almonds and it's deadly good with hazelnuts.

47. No, the honey just improves the flavor.
Peanuts by themselves will work fine; they have plenty of oil in them. I've just futzed with the recipe enough that honey improves the flavor we like. We don't put much sugar in our preserves - technically they're conserves since I don't use sugar in them - and sometimes the peanut butter could use the lift.

Another thing to add: Cinnamon. Just a little. This works especially well with almond butter, because toasted almonds, a little honey and cinnamon taste like sugared fried almonds (a medieval sweet that is really delicious).

32. At 47 i have perfected the PB&J
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 05:44 PM by A HERETIC I AM
And to all you Grape Jelly lovers out there.....GRAPE JELLY SUCKS!!

anyway...here's how you do it;

Toast your bread (Yes...i said TOAST. The following does not work on bread that has not been toasted)
Using a knife, carefully cut a square just inside the crust, just deep enough to cut the surface layer of toasted bread from one slice. ie: if the slice is 3/4 inch thick, cut down about 1/8 inch. Use the knife to carefully pry up the square you have created. The result will be a piece of bread with one toasted side (the outside of the sandwich to be made) and one side with a well or pan created by the removal of the cut portion.

If you like a lot of preserves (like me) this allows extra jelly to be put on this slice and the pan shape will help keep it in while eating. If you like lots of peanut butter, the same applies. If you like lots of both, do both slices!

Bear in mind that you have compromised the slice's structural integrity to a degree, but hey.....it a fucking PB&J! You're gonna eat it over the sink anyway!

Slap another knife full of Peanut Butter and Jelly on the little square that results from this surgery and fold it for a mini sammich!

BTW...best jellys? Home mades, of course and Smuckers Strawberry Preserves or any "Boutique" brand preserves. Apricot, Raspberry, Etc. Apple jelly sucks for the same reason grape does. It's just jellied juice. Preserves rock!

55. I love peanut butter and mayonnaise
I was just checking through my Elvis cookbook -- actually a book about the foods Elvis loved. Anyway, there's a recipe in it for Fool's Gold Loaf which is basically an Xtreme pb&j

You cook up a pound of lean bacon. Then you get a loaf of Italian bread and butter the sides and put it in the oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until the bread is browned. When the bread is done, slice it lengthwise and hollow it out. Then fill it with the bacon and however much peanut butter and jelly as you desire. Put the top back on and enjoy.

46. Anybody like peanut butter pasta?
I love it.

Try it. I make it different everytime, but generally it goes something like this:

lots (LOTS!) of minced garlic heated in a little olive oil
add some tomatoes - any kind of tomato product will do (canned, fresh, salsa, haven't tried ketchup ... yet!) Not much is needed.
then a heaping tablespoon or two of peanut butter (I like crunchy)
soy sauce
fish sauce (optional but really good)
something spicy hot (whatever you got)
lots of water (sauce must be thin - it thickens as it cools)
remove from heat and add fresh cilantro

Don't cook for very long or the peanuts will lose their crunch. Except for the garlic, you just want to heat it through.
I've been wanting to try this with crumbled sausage, just haven't gotten around to it.

Serve over spaghetti.

Fattening??? Who cares.

As a full-time student, having two part-time jobs and raising three kids, I need food I can prepare and eat very quickly. PBJ always works! Luckily none of us are allergic to the ingredients.

I have managed to make mine a little healthier. I use whole grain bread, organic jam/jelly (my favorite is raspberry - and it's only $1.99 at Trader Joes!) and either almond butter or the Whole Kids creamy peanut butter. Usually natural peanut butter is hard to stir but I don't like all the sugar and hydrogenated oil in brands like Jif (even though it tastes yummy! :9) so I was really happy to discover the Whole Foods kids brand.

I lie to myself that my version of PBJ is health food. LOL
