Should I join the "white collar, blue shirt and braces" boys club?
Once again I'm job shopping, and I've been approached by the division of our company that handles "the big BIG money." These guys are the boys club, straight out of Glengary Glen Ross. They all wear blue shirts, white collars, ties and 'braces' (not suspenders.) Major league assholes, basically.

But on the other hand - this gig pays buku dollars. We're talking serious cash here.

Thing is, though, I've never been a "boy's club" kinda guy. I hate golf with a passion, I think an employer's job is to take care of its employees, and I also think that the bottom line is not the most important thing in life.

But the money's gooooooooooooooooooood.

1. Is there a time machine to 1985 where you work?

Are all their ties yellow 'power' :eyes: ties?

I haven't seen the 'white collar-blue shirt-braces' get-up since I watched 'Wall Street'

2. It still exists

Not where I work - I work in the other division that has a lot more character and charm. A lot more freedom. But my job is moving to Chicago, and I, well, I'm not.

Let me put it this way - last time I interviewed there, one of the bosses told me "I like this place because we put in 10-12 hour days, work through our lunch and no one complains about it."

3. I did for twenty years. It was tough going at times due to my politics
and background. Although I came away with a few scars, the income will allow me to retire at 59. It's worth a shot. You can always change your mind.

5. I guess it depends on your priorities
How big a priority is the money? And how big a priority is your free time? Sounds like rather a time consuming, high pressure environment. I used to thrive in those situations but my priorities have changed - I like having my free time, working 8 hours and then going home and not having to think about it.

And of course, what are your options? Money certainly does talk, and loudly. Unfortunately, a lot of the jobs that offer it will also suck the life out of you.

6. "Money doesn't talk, it swears"
Love that line.

Seriously, I think I'm going to go into this with the attitude of "if this job isn't close, and it's not flexible, then I'm not interested."

7. Every "boys club" needs a black sheep, a rebel.
Be the rogue. When it's time for golf, Happy Gilmore it. Mock it all the way to the bank. You'll stand out, which could be a very good thing.

9. How long do you think you could stand it?
10-12 hour days with a bunch of assholes could make Jack, well, an asshole!

10. Yeah, they sound like assholes.
I wore suspenders every day for years (got some nice pairs, too). And I never called them "braces". It's SO pretentious to call them that. How can they even say it with a straight face?

Although, sartorially speaking, suspenders are terrific. They make a great accessory to a nice outfit, and they are much more comfortable than belts. And you never have to clutch at them and jerk your pants up like you do with a belt. A belt cinches your pants around your waist, and it gets very uncomfortable. Suspenders, well, "suspend" your pants from your shoulders and you just kind of walk around in them. Very comfortable. :-)
