Poll question: Golf
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 06:38 PM by undisclosedlocation
Kindly refrain from "All golfers are Republican assholes" type responses, as many fine DUers (GOPisEvil and Matcom leap to mind) are devoted golfers. I think the sport is open to attack only to the degree that its popularity has led to so much acreage being turned into golf courses, especially in places such as coastal areas where the environment is especially sensitive, including to runoff from fertilizer to keep all that grass green. But I'm open to arguments from anyone who knows better.

The thing that what bewilders me about golf as a game is that nobody who plays it ever seems to enjoy themselves at all. It seems like a source of infinite frustration to nearly all golfers I've encountered. So those voting Love it, please reassure me that you're actually having fun. You know how I worry.

2. I'm back to playing 3-4 times a month.
I walk primarily, and play at municipal courses. I'm playing this weekend at some point.

I do have some issues with the fancy-schmancy courses built on ecologically fragile areas. I think there are quite enough golf courses in this country. I also think that all courses should be irrigated with reclamated water.

8. It's one of those weird Scots games
like curling and tossing the caber.

I can say that because I'm an Argyll Campbell and will kick MacDonald butt.

5. I think you have to have played it
to appreciate it.

You watch it on teevee and it looks so easy — but it's not. Good lord, it's not. :banghead:

Therein lies the allure — to make just one shot even remotely resembling those of the pros, who do it seemingly without effort.

Once you do, you're hooked.

6. Other -
Hate it + concerned about environmental impact

Got hit by errant golf balls twice...once while driving past (or kinda through this was a golf course on an Air Force base and the road around the runway which I had to travel to get to my office went through the course) and once while riding my bike along the same route.

I guess that plus one or two other unpleasant run-ins with the game and golfers turned my neutral attitude to active dislike.

And it seems an incredible waste of resources.

7. Never played besides Mini Golf!
:)
Oh yeah, except for that one time I went to a driving range and the ball went like 30 feet! :)

I sometimes watch it on TV but I am not really into it.

10. I suck.
I've only played two or three times. The best part was tooling around in the golf cart.

12. Betting on golf is more fun than playing it
I found a great system for wagering on PGA tour one-on-one matchups in '00. It's very basic, shows no signs of slowing down, and no I'm not tellin'.

13. Bowling is for blue collar, golf is for Repugs can't stand it
Tiger Woods has made it popular again, but get in a foursome and talk politics and see WHO your partners are. Golf still has discriminating private clubs that prohibit, ah fuck it, I just hate it. And golf courses should have been used to support low income housing instead of a playground for the Reich-wing money hungry.

A round of golf will pay for food for a poor family for a week.

14. You have a distorted view of golf then.
The people I play with are not country club assholes (they may be assholes, but not of the country club variety). There are two types of golfers. The regular folks who play munis with no dress code and reasonable prices (I pay under $20 to play on weekends because I walk) and the country club assholes who plot ways to screw the little guy over $1000/hole bets. You should learn to separate one from the other.
