Poll question: uh oh, last day of school for the kid!
what shall I do?

(disclaimer, I love my child, but summer vacation has come too soon and I am mentally unprepared) :)

3. Sangria is cheaper than sending the kid to camp.
Speaking of camp, why in the %*&#@ is it so expensive??? The cheapest in my area is at the YMCA and that's still $135/wk. After 3 months, that REALLY adds up.

5. fortunately I don't have to have him in camp every week
I try to pick and choose, since I work less in the summer. But still. Some of em cost the earth.

7. Summer school.
My daughter is attending.

She's entering first grade this fall. This summer she is taking courses on art history, primary physics, literature and elementary Spanish.

It's free and it keeps her out of the house, plus offers things that she wouldn't have during the school year.

8. interesting!
my son's school is pretty cool, and so far, no need for summer school. They usually have a week of fun camp, though.

somehow I like the go off with a band option, but he's only 10. ;)

11. Not quite old enough to belly up to the bar after a gig.
She doesn't need the summer school but around here it's not a punishment for bad grades. Turns out that many very good students attend summer school to take classes not available during the year or, in case of high schoolers, to earn more credits and graduate early.

So far she loves the physics class and seems to really enjoy Spanish.

13. it really saddens me that they have to take classes
that used to be part of the regular curriculum, and put them as extras in the summer. That doesn't seem right to me.

There are some aspects of the No Child Left Behind law that make some sense, but that is not one of them. It's as if Bush plans to save education by destroying it. Ooops. But that's how he deals with everything! ;D

One of the reasons that I chose to send my son to private school ( after a lot of soul searching) is that I don't think that the arts are, or should be, a luxury. His school focuses on arts and music, in addition to academics. And that's why I have no expensive or brand new furniture!

24. I wanted to send her to a private school
but the only one around here is for fundies.

She wouldn't fit in.

Some of the summer school classes are just extras for the kids; others are things they should have during the year. I'm glad to see the extras in the summer-gives them something else to do. But I do hate seeing things on the list that should be taught all year round toted as an extra.

9. Are there any "enrichment" programs in your area?
I remember when I was a kid, I always attended the town's organized parks program and signed up for the library's summer reading club. That kept me busy and out of my folks hair for awhile.

Perhaps there's a Y, school or some other group that offers sports or other activities -- less expensive than camp while also giving you some breathing room.

But, if all else fails, sangria is a good choice. ;-)

14. our town is kind of a mixed bag
they do have some activities, but no rec. per se. I was thinking about the reading club at the library. I usually pick camps - he usually does some arts and theater camps - so that I can work some during the summer. I was also thinking about fencing. We also have a pool membership. So we'll see.

18. Well, if he's old enough to have a car...
buy him an old junker.

If not, buy him a bus pass.

Either way he'll be out of your hair.

I was thinking about getting him a (whispers) cell phone though. I may just drop him off at the video game store with all the other vid-obsessed.

22. Well, if he's old enough to have a job...
then I assume he's well into puberty and probably isn't looking forward to the prospect of a summer at home any more then you. My advice would be to get him a bicycle or a bus pass or some way of letting him be mobile. The cell phone sounds like a good idea too.

26. no, he's only 10
I'm joking a little in the poll - but it's true that kids that age need to have more complex things to do in the summer than the little ones.

they are all actually pretty well behaved.

But I can empathize. I know the teachers are ready for a long rest.
