Boy suspended for eating teacher's cookie

RICHMOND, Va., June 5 (UPI) -- A Virginia woman says her son's school overreacted when he was suspended and kicked off the baseball team for raiding a teacher's private cookie stash.

Caryl Maitland told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that her son needed to be punished. But she says the Henrico County School District should not have treated eating one cookie as a theft with the punishment including a one-day suspension.

"Eating a cookie, I don't think anybody hardly thinks of as theft," she said recently. "Before they're suspended and disciplined with the hardest discipline, they need to have an understanding of why that's theft."

Jeremy Maitland, a student at Hungary Creek Middle School, got into trouble on May 17 when he went into the building to get some water for a baseball game. He told officials the next day that someone else knocked over the cookie container and he ate one while picking up the contents.

3. I am so glad that I am done with grade school ...

because the things students are suspended for these days are CRAZY. Every year we had to sign a paper saying that we abide by the code of conduct rules which are on the books in our school system. I understand that it was the teacher's private stash ... but really.
