If the "institution of marriage" is so fucking sacred,
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 12:57 PM by RevCheesehead
how long until asshole decides to outlaw divorce, and outlaw heteros living together unless they're married?

God, this asshole makes me sick, sick, sick.
And them damned announcers on TV, saying he represents the views of evangelicals. Apparently, evangelicals are worried about immigration, too.

Oh, and one more thing: I am so fucking sick of hearing the words "activist judges." How about a fucking activist president? One who decides he doesn't have to follow laws which are inconvenient to him?

I am seething with rage over this asshole, and his "Divider" agenda.

11. I don't think so.
Whatever reason there is to oppose gay marriage bans or promote gay marriage, this issue resonates with the rank and file, especially in the fly-over states. In Ohio roughly 1/2 of the Kerry voters also voted for the gay marriage ban.

23. Most disgusting.
I'd love to say, "Thank goodness I'm in Minnesota," but we've got a gay-marriage ban issue percolating here, too. I will never understand why so many people care so freaking much about how other people live their own lives, when it is truly of no consequence to anyone but those directly involved. If people would just loosen the hell up about sexual issues in general, we could turn our attention to the issues that actually warrant some form of action.

30. You're right factually and rationally, BUT...
...like all hot-button issues, this is about gut reaction, not reason. People have cultural assumptions and one of those is that the main purpose of marriage is procreation. Another is that rugrats need two parents of opposite gender. Even people who generally support gay rights in workplace discrimination or partner benefits are often offended by gay marriage because it implicitly means that their world view is not as absolutely correct as they thought. It is the same as people who are generally for racial equality who are offended by interracial marriage. Somehow it interfers with an assumed divine plan. In particular, it challenges the strong-father-figure family and societal model that conservatives in particular seem to favor. I'm not agreeing with this view, mind you, only explaining how it comes about.

42. I'm sure you're right.
I just don't understand where the fear comes from that causes people to be so inflexible in their thinking. I wasn't raised in a home where I was indoctrinated with the kind of religious beliefs or the black-and-white thinking patterns so many conservatives have; so it's difficult for me to empathize with their mindset. I often have gut reactions to things as well, but given a bit of time to consider a situation, I generally develop a more balanced perspective. Sometimes I wonder if these people are beyond help.

9. "outlaw heteros living together unless they're married"
Some states do outlaw that. Here in Ohio, the gay marriage ban Const. amendment outlaws legal recognition of any relationship that approximates marriage.

16. I say call them on it
Because I doubt that this is about protecting marriage. This is about discrimination, pure and simple. If they wanted to really protect marriage, they would pass all those things, but they'll NEVER pass all those things, because most of them would be guilty of a crime if they DID try to pass those things.

22. You're right.
If they wanna get all biblical and legalistic, then they have to:

* kill all adulterers
* forbid divorce... or at the very least, forbid remarriage after divorce, provided the ex is still alive.
* remove "annulment" as an abomination (really, saying a marriage "never existed?" Like they were in a time-warp?)
* refer to all children born out of wedlock as "bastards."

It's about our "representatives" running out the clock on their epic failure to govern. They are not trying to legislate--they are doing their best to avoid such aberrant behavior--they are only hoping to galvanize the ignorant, thereby minimizing the rebuke they face in November.
