A jackpine is a sort of scrubby variety of pine. Lots of them grew up in the northwoods after it was cleared out by the loggers in the 19th century, and locally (WI, MN, & on MI's UP) the people who moved in onto the nearly worthless land when the loggers moved out were called "jackpine savages." Their descendents still carry the label, more-or-less tongue in cheek these days.
