Help! Foreign language proficiency tests?
Edited on Fri May-26-06 06:01 PM by crispini
Ok, when I got out of the Peace Corps I took a Thai language proficiency test. I seem to remember this was a pretty standardized, official type of test.... maybe something used by the Foreign Service? .... same name of test across multiple languages... and they gave you a score. The thing is that I don't remember the name of the test AT ALL. Anyone got any ideas what the test might have been called? If I could just remember the name of the test and what the rankings were, I bet I could remember what my score was.

I've got some certificate somewhere, but the chances of me finding it?...

1. Three-letter abbreviation party
Couldn't really find too much. A lot of sites referred to the ILR or FSI scale for scoring language proficiency tests, but generally seemed to be indicating that the Foreign Service uses oral interviews to test proficiency (and that this is what the ILR or FSI is for). The standardized test for post-graduate types is the GRE; I'm unclear whether they have a test for the Thai language. I'm kind of inclined to bet against. Anyway, sorry not to be of more help; at least your thread is kicked so maybe somebody who knows the answer will turn up.

2. It *was* an oral interview, now that I think about it.
Hmmm, thanks... I'll see if those scales ring a bell!

4. Good, then I'm not the only one.
I keep reading it like that, too.
