Is there any such thing as airborne POISON IVY?
Here I am sitting in my living room, watching the West Wing and my right hand starts to itch. The top of my hand is now covered in hives. Very odd.

1. yes, if someone is burning it
the oil that causes the reaction is carried in the smoke. I had a friend get poison ivy in his throat and lungs from this. I always try and think of him when I get a little and start to complain...

4. yes, i concur
my wife, and both her parents are very suspetible to poison ivy. We had some on our property, and i didn't even realize it was poison ivy, and it was all over our tree branches and what not..i trimeed all the trees, and started burning them, and my wife came home, and came out to talk to me...she got hit with the smoke from the fire, later on that night, she got the rash...not badly though, thank god...but now, i know what poison ivy looks like...:)

12. my crazy neighbor was hospitalized for a week
burning poison ivy is close to criminal but it sounds like an honest mistake and you were lucky it wasn't much worse

people can actually die from inhaled burned poison ivy and he nearly did

it isn't worth burning stuff that you don't know what it is, because you could be releasing poison into the air

the sad part abt my neighbor's story is that he KNEW it was poison ivy, thought it would be easier than bagging it

sigh

lucky he didn't half-kill anybody else while he was at it

18. I just didn't know any better
I think i got some tolerance to it, because i was using barehands on it, and was there for a couple hours burning all the brush down. I'm from alaska, where not even grass grows well...I have seen poison ivy at times on tv, but paid no mind....

But, lessons learned...:) Man, your crazy neighbor, paid the a hefty price for their mistake...:(

10. Apparently, sudden onset is characteristic of hives. Just means you're
allergic to something. One of the many Google results for sudden onset hives: http://www.allergyescape.com/the-hives.html

11. I do have some allergies
But I usually only get itchy from cats and bunnies. Maybe I'll take one of my allergy pills and see if that helps.

13. Gee, I hope it ain't shingles.
I thought I had an outbreak of hives, but it was a very pronounced rash in a localized area.

Have you had chicken pox? If so, you might be getting an outbreak.

16. Shingles is the dormant chicken pox virus in your system.
If you've had the pox, then you might have shingles. It's usually brought on by stress, but other things can cause an outbreak. Keep an eye on the area. If you begin to experience pain in that area, get to a doctor right away - it will minimize the duration of the shingles.

I had my first outbreak last February. Not fun at all. The doc told me that it was good that I came in right away, so they could give me the meds I needed right away.

15. Take a pic of it in case you need to see a doc
I have chronic hives, under control with Allegra, and sometimes having to add Zyrtec. It was really helpful to the doc that I took photos of my some of my outbreaks.

17. Yes. Highly susceptible people can get
a poison oak rash from the air. I do. If I hike near poison oak, I will react unless I take what I call a poison oak shower and clean my clothes. I react to it very easily.
