I don't give a shit, but the media does. So what's the big American Idol
controversy because I cannot watch it, but I can't look away.

2. AI is not a musical talent show per se
Had it been a real talent show, you might have seen a different outcome in several cases.

Remember this is lower common denominator America voting, and the media puts its schtick on it, the drama, the stories, the controversies, high profile guests etc.

4. I don't watch it either, but
I'm pretty sure that viewers call in their votes (costs them 50 cents or something?). Lowest # of votes gets tossed.

6. it was a shocker.
period.

katharine sucked the last two shows, and was visibly shocked that she didn't get booted both weeks. Chris should have been in the top two. it's a travesty.

btw, re: the person who thought voted cost 50 cents, it's free. I text my votes in. I voted solely for chris, guess I should have voted a billion times like I would have liked, but you can only vote so many times in two hours.

5. Apparently Chris got voted off, and he was really good
or some shit.

At least, that's what I heard on the radio yesterday...

Is there another controversy?

7. Some people are claiming that phone numbers were screwed up
Edited on Fri May-12-06 03:01 PM by Mike Daniels
A few people have claimed that they called the number listed on screen for Chris and that the calls got directed to Katherine's total.

Of course, they weren't claiming this before Chris got voted off..only after.

22. You are so right.
Watching the smoozing, recruiting, bashing, etc. has been quite a lesson. I think we Democrats had better learn to play the game or hang it up forever. The internet has changed everything.

BTW, politics has completely ruined the American Idol show so don't bother watching it. Too bad, because I love talent shows.

13. Considering what I know about American Idol (almost nothing) and what
I know about the American public (quite a bit), I bet I can tell you exactly what happened.

Typical voter: "Well, Chris is doing really well, he is gonna be fine. But I also like (insert name of another contestant), and don't want her to be voted off, so I'll vote for her just in case."

Imagine if 2 million people did that...

12. Supposedly Chris wanted off the show
so the votes were manipulated (no word about Diebold involvement) to allow him to leave.
Rumor has it that he was offered a job as the singer for a group called Fuel and if he had won AI he wouldn't have been free to accept the offer.

15. So, why didn't he just intentionally throw the competition?
Although, I guess once your fan base gets to a point you could turn in a horrendous performance on purpose and still beat out people who were better that given week.

Still, I remember one contestant deliberately dropped out of the show a few seasons back so there's always that option. Simply, "Hey guys, it was fun but I'm leaving..." unless that would lead to some breach of contract matter.

17. He can't accept it now
The contract runs until the end of the tour for anyone who made the Hollywood rounds. And I think it may even apply to contestants before that. I remember "Scooter Girl" saying that she was offered a role in "Rent" on Broadway and some commercial endorsements but couldn't take them because of the contract.

21. He turned down Fuel months ago so that wasn't the reason. n/t
Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:05 PM by laureloak
American Idol producers just trotted Fuel out there to try to appease angry Chris fans.

Hey, I voted for two hours for Chris. At 10:10 I started getting a recording on line 06 saying that the line had been disabled (not disconnected) and I had to switch to his other line 02. I could hardly get through because it was always busy. Way busier than prior weeks.

Most interesting to watch how AI unfolds. It is just like the Presidental race. Taylor Hick fanbase calls themselves the Soul Patrol. They operate just like the Republican party, no kidding!

The show has been ruined by politics.

14. People are upset because he is better than Kat...
but lots of better singers get voted off before they should.

I don't think there's any real controversy, they're just hyping the show.

I know a few people that thought Chris was awful, heard comments like 'his vibrato sounds like a goat', 'he mugs for the camera too much' etc. So his getting voted off really didn't surprise me too much. He only recently learned to sing from his gut... so... anyway.

23. Are you kidding? Chris Daughtry is FABULOUS.
Every performance was stellar. Every song sounded like a recording. He has the most amazing recording voice I've ever heard. I can't wait for his music to hit the air ways and shelves.

BTW, I'm 56 years old!

then you know the guy is talented.

Chris Daughtry is one of the best singers I've ever heard. His voice is perfect for recording. Remember the name cause it won't be long before it'll be a household word.

All along it's been the assumption that he would win, that's why there's such an uproar. AND rightfully so - the guy is in a league of his own.

He was the best of all the celebs working with the contestants. Barry is a genius with musical arrangement but Chris is a better singer.

BUT, I still think Elvis had the most beautiful singing voice ever.

Edited on Fri May-12-06 11:21 PM by primate1
People begin to realize "Hey, this show sucks!" They stop watching. It gets cancelled.

I remember back when it first started, my first thought was "Wow, if this lasts past one season, I will lose all faith in humanity." Here I am, five years later, as misnthropic as ever.

32. I love talent shows, and that's the big appeal for me.
Since you watch the same contestants perform over and over, you get to see their talent blossom - or in some cases, get tapped out. I also like the Cinderella aspect - an ordinary person gets transformed into a star.

I won't watch the rest of this season. Without Chris Daughtry there isn't much talent left. His leaving was a big fluke.
