Any recommendations for Rome?
We'll be there for 4 days in June, and looking for any advice Loungers might provide!

TIA

1. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

2. I partied my ass off at Club Alien for free.
Super popular club when I was there a few years ago. The one guy in the group was a Lenny Kravitz clone, so he walked in "party of nine behind me" and we all got a free night there. Unfortunately, we were heading home the next day, so I spent 10 hours on the flight back, fucked up and with a broken tv screen sitting between two chaperones (college honor's program trip).

I saw a bunch of Italy though. I found Naples to be Ghetto-ish and Pompeii to be overly-commercial, although it is funny to see 2000 year old porn on a wall. If you have questions, I was in Rome, Naples, Padua, Pisa, Verona, Florence (absolutely FUCKING awesome), and Venice.

3. I can recommend a great hotel. The buses are easy... cabs are not bad..
you MUST see the coliseum. You MUST see the APPIAN WAY... and try to get to the christian catacombs down the road a ways, same neighborhood.

Tip for gelato: In order to avoid the fake ice cream, check the color of their pistachio. If it's bright, plastic green, then they use artificial ingredients. If it's dark and towards grey, it's natural, fresh and real, as will be all the rest of their ingredients.

Drink wine instead of water.

Never eat in an empty restaurant and try to pick a restaurant with NO tourist menu and filled with locals. Your food will be much better.

5. Thanks..
We have a hotel already, the Sheraton (they had a really good deal for it on Expedia). I'd forgotten about the catacombs, thanks, I really would like to see them.

7. The catacombs are cool... they were a real trip. The buses are pretty easy
but make sure you learn a little bit of italian. It helps a lot.

And you must always leave a tip when eating out, even just 1 or 2 euro, even if the menu says service is included. The included service charge goes to the owner, not the wait person.

The Trevi Fountain is so pretty; the Pantheon IS AMAZING.. stunning, all of a sudden, you round a busy city corner and BAM, there is it.. right in front of you. You'll see my favorite beggar woman on the top of the Steps of course.. say hello. I've seen her in Rome, Paris and Venice. She really gets around.

Watch out for pickpockets, especially if you're on the trains. Beware of young women with no purses or bags, or just carrying an infant with no gear.... a classic ruse.

And enjoy..... I love Rome. Great city. Is that the sheraton roma?? you're quite a ways from everything out there. I can highly recommend this hotel for their incredible service, lovely rooms, great, GREAT location http://www.hoteldellemuse.com

It's in a quiet neighborhood but close to all the transport. And just down the street is THE BEST gelateria in the world.
