Anyone know about $$$ and transport from London's Trafalgar Square
Edited on Thu May-04-06 02:12 PM by Radio_Lady
to Gatwick Airport?

We're have a problem finding pricing information and understanding relative expense and convenience of the various methods. Taxis look like $150 (or more) from London to Gatwick!! We've also thought using the Gatwick Express -- the train -- but not too thrilled with figuring this out via the Internet.

What's cheaper? What's you best advice for doing this? Perhaps you've figured out any of this?

We will have 4 regular sized suitcases, and a couple of tote-bags and two carry-ons.

If you can direct me to a web site or two, I'd be grateful.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

1. You can take a bus to the square for about $15 each, then grab a cab from
there to your hotel.

You can literally just go the bus depot right there in Gatwick. The people are very friendly and will help you get exactly where you need to go...

5. That's the wrong way around, sorry. We're flying into Edinburgh,
Scotland, then taking the train to London. After the visit, we leave from Trafalgar Square-London and need to get to our departure point, which is Gatwick airport and fly back to New York City.

8. Oh hell, have your hotel get you a private car hire to the airport for $50
... You'll be so tired, it's an absolute joy to have a nice mercedez pick you up from the hotel and take you. Luxury aside,

Check this page on easyjet. They show how really easy it is to use public transport to get to Gatwick and your hotel will absolutely help you once you've arrived. You really have nothing to worry about.

2. Also you can take the train, which isn't too very expensive.
You should get a BritRail or Eurorail pass before you go over. That way, it won't cost you a fortune on the trains.

3. Does Brit. Rail allow Eurail passes?
They did not when I was there. That was about seven years ago. Buy your rail passes here from a travel agency.

4. Take the tube to Victoria's Station.
Switch to British Rail to Gatwick. That's my recollection from the last time I was in London.

7. BE CAREFUL about the time of day, though
I've hauled luggage through London tube stations at rush hour on a few occassions, and I can say that you probably don't want to be doing this at a busy time of day.

Worse comes to worse, take a black cab from Trafalgar to Victoria station. It may be a few £££s extra, but it will definitely be worth the headache prevention.

Once you get to Victoria, take the BR train to Gatwick. Last time I was there it was ±£7-- but this was ten years ago now. Either way, it's your best bet to Gatwick.

9. The Gatwick Express is probably best
http://www.gatwickexpress.com/

That runs from Victoria Station and costs £14 single, £25 return. Victoria is a simple hop along the Circle or District Line from Embankment Station (which is very close to Trafalgar Square). The Gatwick Express takes half an hour.

See also http://www.nationalrail.co.uk

By coach: the coach station is at Victoria as well. This takes an hour and twenty minutes.

10. Thanks so much to all the DUers who participated here today.
My husband is pleasantly surprised at how many of you chimed in with this single request.

Time for a group hug -- :grouphug:

Wish we could do this in person!

In peace,

Radio_Lady & Gramps her spouse!
