guys who say "my wife" instead of "the wife"
WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY TO CLAIM OWNERSHIP OF A HUMAN BEING!?!?
Putting the posessive in front of wife is demeaning!

1. I agree. The whole notion of a "wife" is demeaning...
...as are gender-specific pronouns.

This is why I refer to dolo as "it" or "that."

The bonbon-eating flesh-puppet in my bed does talk, and quite a bit.

15. As opposed to yours
Mine, yours, theirs, ours.

I don't beleive the intent is to be possesive. But to differentiate between the millions of Wives as to which the conversation is refering to.

The Wife sounds more like an object than a human being. IMHO

16. Actually I prefer it to "the"
Edited on Tue May-02-06 04:12 PM by SoCalDem
People identify their loves with possesives..

MY car
My apartment

It's also a truth. When people marry they become husband and wife.. To each other, which implies "ownership".. They agree to remain faithful to each other, they belong to each other..

A guy who says "the wife" is being disrespectful, IMHO :)

and in a large gathering where people are mingling with people they do not know, it's commom to say "my wife/husband" to differentiate them from all the others there who are NOT.

24. seconded
I say, "my husband," "my mother," "my sister," "my friend." It indicates my relationship to them.

Besides, they aren't the only husbands, mothers, sisters and friends in the world. I just doesn't make sense for me to say something like "I'm meeting the husband at 3:00." Most people would understand that I meant my particular husband, but why not make it clear.

Also, "the wife" sounds one step removed from "the little woman"

She's "your" wife in the sense she's married to you, not to someone else. "The" wife could be any wife in the universe. Is this really what we've come to? Jesus Christ, people. Get the knot out of your undies and join the rest of sane society.

32. Well, to avoid confusion and possible legal action, I just say: "My wife".
As in: "I went to bed with my wife last night." Instead of: "I went to bed with YOUR wife" or HIS wife, etc.

Saves a lot of trouble.
