Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 10:06 PM by uppityperson
seriously, why is violence accepted, yet people giggle in embarrasment when you say a biological term rather than its euphamistic term? I'm not talking here in DU Lounge, but in the media, in public, wherever. I don't get it.

2. Because we are a very sick society, and very sexually immature
as a culture. Holdovers from some of the bad parts of some forms of Christianity in this country, and we haven't shaken it off yet, even though for the most part Europe has managed to.

Yep, no problem with allowing kids to see hundreds, or thousands, of violent deaths on TV and movies, and even to hear a lot of foul language, but God forbid they hear the word "penis" or see a breast or even see a couple people making simulated fuckin' on a show because they love each other.

Yeah, God forbid that a child should be exposed to something that is TOTALLY NATURAL.

4. and any bets that this will get locked for mentioning those words
"sex thread" indeed. It is a legitimate question. Why do we have violence be ok, but have to use euphamisms and then giggle? Call it a penis, my god it is NOT a cock, that is a rooster. It is a vagina, not a pussy, that is a feline. Breasts are breasts, not tits, those are little birds. I HATE VIOLENCE! Could not watch LOTR even. Bah.

Which is why we need to have more honest, mature discussions on this topic in our country.

... the most minute chance that something you may say might sexually arouse someone somewhere is the worst possible thing you could ever do.

21. I don't get it either,
but I agree with quite a few of the other posters on the thread. Christianity/church/religion has put a huge damper, force against showing, saying, anything of a sexual nature. I don't know why. I know, from my religious upbringing, it was considered bad to have sex before marriage, cause you will burn in hell, you couldn't masturbate, cause you know, you will burn in hell even worse, and so on, and so forth.

As a young man, growing up under a thumb like that, I didn't understand much about the opposite sex at all, had to learn the hard way, asking other friends, and stealing playboys, and hustlers, to see what the hell is going on with Women, and what do, they have under there, that would be so horrible, if i touched it, or said what it was, I would burn in hell...

Also, same sort of control. I was raised mormon, was told caffeine is bad for you, but never told why. When I was in the 7th grade, my older sister, bought a two liter of coke, and had it in the fridge. I snuck down stairs, in the early morning, took the coke out of the fridge, went outside, and sat near the creek behind my parents house. Slowly, very slowly opened the two liter, and had swig..I thought, i was going to like, turn into something horrible, or that something horrible was going to happen, cause the way i was broght up, my parents made it seem like, caffeine/alcohol=same thing. And i didn't know what to expect, i drank more, and a bit more...didn't notice anything wrong, and again, why was i told this?

Funny, church, religion....

23. As a child....
my Mother (ultra-liberal social worker) told me I was not allowed to watch violence.

She had no problem with me seeing nudity. She made it clear to me that the "sex" I saw in movies was not accurate to real life. There was no music in real life she said. Unless you turned on the radio. Hehe.

She walked in one day when my buddy and I were watching Mad Max. I was probably eight. She exploded. She grounded me from TV for a month. Made my friend go home. Sat down and had the talk.

Needless to say, all my friends parents had to address her and tell her how backwards it was. But she stuck to her guns.

My Mom made me realize a lot of things.

33. My mom had similar views.
I tend to handle things the same way with my children. I don't believe graphic sex is appropriate by any means, but a movie that has a breast for God's sake, well, not a big deal. Violence is something else all together.

I wonder if it has to do with our having had sex, but most of us haven't experienced severe violence, hence violence is sexy, as it were?

29. Whatever the reasons; it's a sad sad commentary on all of us.
Nakedness, sex, "love", affection should be hidden deep into the depths of nothingness, violence should be stuffed in our faces.

30. The politician hype over Grand Theft Auto is
the most ridiculous example. This is a video game based on stealing cars and shooting people, including police. That's all fine, but as soon as someone discovered it was possible to download an extra sex scene there were politicians denouncing it all over the place. Can someone tell me why something natural like sex is so much worse than killing people?

32. Years ago I worked at a Christian school
and during lunch we started talking about movies. The pastors daughter-in-law and I were discussing scar face which she had seen. She talked about how violent it was and when I said I'd rather see sex the entire lunch room went silent. No one would look at me or discuss it further. I cracked up laughing! I asked if they'd all rather see violence than stories love and sex and they ALL said YES! I laughed until I couldn't breathe. They never talked to me again after that. lol

35. The breast obsession is especially pathetic.
When PREPUBESCENT GIRLS WITH NO BREASTS can't go aroung bare chested, something is terribly wrong. Any body part that is taboo becomes fetishized. The ancient Egyptions and Sumerians had no problem with bare breasts. Most "primitive" poeples around today have no problem with bare breasts.
