Ben Franklin was a penny-pinching money grubbing asshole.
He was practically a freeper. "A penny saved is a penny earned" - was this his economic platform? And really - just to save a few bucks, he comes up with Daylight Savings Time? Like everyone should uproot their lives just to save more money? And he discovers electricity, but doesn't have the patience to wait for the lightbulb?

It's time for congress to do something useful, and abolish DST once and for all. :grr:

:hangover:

"See a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll say, 'Great. Another useless fuckin' penny - guess I'll add it to the jar.'"

3. Franklin also used his Leiden Jar (capacitor) to shock his party guests!
Early American frat boy prankster!

"Really, funny, Ben. You shocked the crap out of me - literally! And these were my best pantaloons, you dick."

6. And to think they used to call him wise.
But what else would you expect from someone who went to bed early, and got up early?

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise"? He was a flip-flopper, for sure.

18. That's not saving pennies - that's cooking the book so the pennies
are worth more

If we ever get the truth out about those no-bid contracts all those 'pennies' will be worth less than a penny

17. the worst part of this time switch
for me as a kid. Was that it was way too cold to use my telescope in the winter. Then just as it started to warm up - BOOM - the clocks would jump and it would not get dark until too late for me to go out.

I think penny-pinching is just common sense, especially when I had very little income. It's also how I got my house paid off so quickly instead of blowing all my money on a car or something.

22. His publications were much different than his politics
because his publications were his business. His politics were his beliefs.

What he did as postmaster for the colonies, and as a state representative, and as an ambasador were far more important than his almanacs.

As for daylight savings time, well, it's a good enough idea that it's been adopted throughout most of the world. Few ideas have ever been that universally adopted without coersion at the point of a gun.

26. Um..... Ben Franklin didn't come up with Daylight Saving Time
And it had nothing to do with saving money. It was put forth solely so that the new business class would have an extra hour of sunshine after work to enjoy the summer with some outdoor activity. So don't blame the farmers either, which so many people do! Farmers don't care what the clock says - the cows still have to be milked at dawn and dusk.

But I have a soft spot for Franklin - he was so damn offbeat. What about Wilford Brimley? Jara Sang has a lovely bit going on about him.
