The New Cars - "But Not Tonight" ROCKS!!!
A friend just gave me a copy of the new New Cars song and I LOVE it!!!

I was a huge fan of The Cars back in the day and was kind of icked out about the idea of the band going forward without Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr. But the new song and the addition of Todd Rundgren on vocals has me so fucking happy I an barely stand it. :) :) :)

They are coming to the Bay Area in May and I think I will have to get myself some tickets. Last time I saw The Cars was w-a-y back at the Cow Place here in San Franscio with Wang Chung opening for them.

Has anyone else heard it yet??

5. Within the first ten bars...
it was clear it sounded like classic Cars. It's nice that Rundgren isn't doing an Ocasek imitation -- that would be just way to cheesy. They are supposed to be having a live album comming out -- old Cars with three New Cars songs. Can't wait!

8. I haven't listened yet, so I'll give it a chance...
but I'm having a hard time with the idea of the Cars without Ric or Ben.

6. It's OK, but I don't think that they should try resurecting the Cars
Todd Rundgren has enough star power on his own that he could pull in the people, no matter what he called the Band. I while I appreciate the nod to Rick O and the Cars, Rundgren himself is admitting that they're going to go new directions with the band.

I think that they would have been better to have called the band something else, and while they could have still paid homage to the Cars, they wouldn't have the weight of all these fans expectations now that they're the New Cars.

7. Easton and Hawkes were The Cars members...

who were pushing for a new album and tour but Ocasek said no thanks (his own album and a tour were coming up). Since they were the musicians whose "sound" made The Cars I can see why they wanted to remain The Cars and went looking for a new lineup. And, from what he says below, I think Todd is pretty happy to have gotten this gig. :)

The New Cars
In 2005, rumors began circulating that Easton and Hawkes would be teaming with Todd Rundgren in a new Cars lineup. As preposterous as the rumor seemed, it turned out to be true, with the revamped lineup calling itself The New Cars. Two regular Rundgren collaborators, bassist Kasim Sulton and drummer Prairie Prince, are replacing Orr and Robinson in the new lineup.

The band's first single, "Not Tonight," released on March 20, 2006, sounds uncannily like the original group.

According to a March 14, 2006 press release announcing The New Cars, a greatest hits collection, The New Cars: It's Alive, will be released May 9 on Eleven Seven Music. The album will include classic Cars songs recorded live plus never-before-released studio tracks.

A summer tour with Blondie kicks off May 12 in Mississippi.

Rundgren has referred to the project as "an opportunity ... for me to pay my bills, play to a larger audience, work with musicians I know and like, and ideally have some fun for a year." Ocasek --who has opted out of any possibilities of a reunion -- has reportedly given his blessing to Hawkes and Easton, saying, "I want Elliot and Greg to be happy."
