1. Lobster used to be for the poor people or fertilizer
In North America, prior to the 20th century, lobster was not popular as food. In the Maritimes, eating lobster was considered a mark of poverty. In some parts of the Maritime provinces of Canada, lobster was used as a fertilizer for farmers' fields.

Blech. You might as well pay 40 bucks to eat a spider...Plus they're bottom feeders so you're getting all the nice settled garbage and toxins back into your system. Blech.

4. And, interestingly, when ships were being used to
transport goods to the Americas as they were being settled, many sailors had it written into their contracts that they would only eat lobster 2 times a day. I always found that fact to be so interesting, because I LOVE lobster, but when we go to Maine and I eat a lot of it, I break out in hives.

6. Yup
Of course back then they canned it and it was apparently pretty bad and spoiled easily. It wasn't until they figured out to keep them alive and cook them right before eating that people caught on to it, then it became a craze and sort of settled into being a normal thing.

Are you allergic to Lobster that badly that you break out in hives?

5. Actually, cockroach exoskeletons contain glucose or sucrose or something.
At least, that's what I've been told. You can probably dig out the guts and grind up the exoskeleton to make a sweet paste.

PS—I agree that crustaceans are bugs. Heck, they're arthropods, aren't they?

7. Well bugs are actually just a variety of insect
But people also use Bug for every type of Arthropod.

Insects, Spiders, Centipedes and Milipedes. Those plus Crustateons are the Arthropods. The rest are gross to us, why not Lobsters? Just weird.

11. Oh no i'm totally with you on that one
Definately gross. Swimming bugs. I just think it's interesting that people who wouldn't each General Tso's Chicken because it's too 'weird' (ie foreign food is icky people) would probably happily eat a lobster (which is just a big swimming bug).

Weird. Weird how people don't associate crustaceans with insects, spiders, centipedes, and milipedes.

15. Well, people used to be more sensible about lobster.
It used to be nobody liked the stuff, so it was insanely cheap. People used to feed it to laborers until the laborers started demanding contracts that placed limits on how much lobster could be foisted on them.

Now it's considered a delicacy and is insanely expensive.
