1. No one can truly understand what it is like to be another person.
But that does not preclude anyone from having tolerance and empathy.

11. My condolences.
Do not take that the wrong way... he will have challenges the likes few people can wholly understand.

10. The choice is yours. People have three options in life:
1. Get to know and communicate with a person.
2. Live with the stereotypes associated with that person.
3. Not bother with that person; pretend they do not exist.

Guess which one of the three is the least occurring in my "life". ;)

7. Tom Petty asked me that once
Well, not just me, I guess everyone who heard the song. It wasn't a question, just a declaration. I think. I didn't really understand him, though.

9. Other. Atheists have their own ....
.... crosses to bear, heh heh ....

Don't think either one of our groups will ever have a President of the U.S. ....

both have trouble finding spouses ... I have given up on getting married for that (among other) reasons ...

both are hated to a more or less open degree by most people...

the situations are different, though, I will grant ...

12. Atheists don't believe in God. What's the issue with the Aspies'?
'Because we are so socially inept by default' is the only thing I can presume.

13. Sorry. I did not know about Aspies (Asbergers?) part of your
life. No offense meant. I was referring to ..... something else that I thought I knew about you, that I thought you were referring to ...

Sorry!

15. It's all right. :) But I think I can say this at this point in my life:
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:25 PM by HypnoToad
The "other part" of my life is meaningless.

Assuming, of course, I'm thinking of what you think you're thinking is what I was originally thinking. :) (Indeed, I thought no malice of you when you made your post; I hope you hadn't thought any on my part.)

well ... lets just say that I am Bi, so I was thinking along those general lines ...

Edited to add: I still don't know what your post was about, and if you don't want to say, that is fine ...

19. I'm also bi. But given my social-life track record,
there are bigger reasons why I consider it all worthless.

21. If this is all about asbergers, as a teacher I have
worked with students with asbergers, and have found many of them (and your posts seem to indicate this) to be well able to function perfectly normally with other people...

in fact, one of my friends thinks that I tend that way (I don't think so), and I interact well enough for an introvert...

your posts indicate someone IMO who can get along normally with others ...

I've known and loved Aspies. I've also read books written by and about Aspies.

16. How could I?
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:29 PM by DarkmoonIkonoklast
Empathy is not the understanding of another's pain... it is the acceptance of the fact of that pain, and the instinctual drive to share it.

In the '60's, we were big on being understood... now, I'm less interested in understanding than in accepting...

"You are"... I don't need to understand you to accept you as you are... If we spend time together, I can strive to understand you as you are willing to reveal yourself to me, but I accept you because you, like me, are a child of the great mystery...

That I usually anthropromorphize that mystery as the Mother is my own avatarization... NOT a statement on my part of any Cosmic Truth...
