So apparently I owe $300 to the state of NJ
I bought a car this past summer from a family member and he gave me a deal on it. I got it for $2000. Well I get a letter in the mail from the department of taxation telling me I owe $300 dollars in taxes because apparently my car is worth $5,500. There is no way in HELL that a 1996 Nissan Maxima with 150,000 miles is worth that much money. Not to mention who is the state to say how much a private citizen can sell his or her car for, a car that sales tax has been paid on it twice before I bought it. This is bullshit!

2. I know!
They quoted the high retail price from the N.A.D.A. website. 1)I bought it from a private party and 2)It was far from perfect condition. They have no way of knowing what condition the car was in, for all they know the car could of needed a new engine or something and thats why I paid what I did. Utter bullshit on the state's part

5. Tell them that the crank journals need to be replaced
What? Like they're gonna send someone over to your house to verify this.

6. They can't prove my car isn't a beater...
why should I pay full book value (futhermore what idiot EVER pays full book value) for a car that clearly had flaws

7. Exactly!
I know confronting them with logic might make their heads explode like a Jiffy-Pop popper, but a car that old could be rife with problems. What if the previous owners never changed the oil?
