2. I don't think so!
:P

If there was a good 3rd party alternatrive that would do what photoshop does, I'd use it instead. But Photoshop has got some nice, well thought-out features.

That and Adobe doesn't have "competitive" upgrades, which is a bit of a pity...

3. Isn't photoshop 6 an old version?
I have photoshop 7, and that's a good three years old.

$275 for something that's probably more than 4 years old?

4. Well, $275 + CS2 upgrade ($150) = $425
Rather less than $699 for CS2 new, wouldn't you say? :D

And 100% legal.

Of course, if PhotoImpact 11 can do ALL of what Photoshop 7 does, I'd buy it instead and save $355 from all that rigmarole.

5. It's a couple of versions old
So that price isn't unrealistic. With the cost to upgrade to the current version, you won't be saving anything.

Of course, if PS 6 is all you need, you're all set.

Take a look at Photoshop Elements too.

6. You've checked out "Photoshop Elements," right?
I use the full-blown Photoshop CS2, but for friends who don't need the high-end features (or won't take the time to learn the whole program), Elements has a few pluses. First, It really does include a sizable chunk of functionality from the full program. You'll find MANY of the "nice, well thought-out features" you mention. Second, it's basically the same interface...so learning Elements makes it a snap to switch over to full Photoshop if and when the opportunity arises.

Amazon's got it for 80 bucks.

7. I've got photoshop elements 2... not impressed. Will PSE4 do these:
Use layers

Make a selection but then make it onto another layer instead? (e.g. I have an existing black shape. I want to make a path out of it, but apply the custom path on a deifferent layer that has a pattern I want to make the shape from)

Alter hue/saturation via selected colors (reds,. oranges, greens, et al instead of the whole thing)

Use photoshop filters

If it can do all 4 of the above, I'll get PSE4

9. Thanks...
Sadly, adobe's webpage says little that's useful unless I'm a family member with 23 kids, oversized ego, and have no talent whatsoever. I've been scouring (and scowling) over lots of review pages that say jack shit except for about how easy it is to use for managing and altering photos and for how bloody slow it runs, even on new hardware. My old programs do all this stuff already, and more. Just not as completely distinctive as how the full photoshop can.

I need image editing more than I need home-user photo tinkering; hence a partial list of my needs stated previously. (Slicing images being another biggie, what for creating web pages and all...).

PSE4 also has no support for Windows 2000. Forget that product, I shall.

Maybe I should save the time and spend the full $700. What the hell. It's only money; I learned that from my government.

10. A few years ago I bit the bullet and got the full product...
And then I bought the version 6, 7, CS, and CS2 upgrades...at around $200 each, depending on the source.

So for Photoshop alone, I'm really shackled in the hull of the good ship Adobe. They know they have the gold standard when it comes to this product. The "up" side is that it does everything I need it to do, I use it daily, and (for whatever this is worth) I have a degree of credibility when I'm speaking with peers and I'm a Photoshop user.

I hate to say "it's worth it"...but in all fairness, Photoshop is one of the few programs that really is "worth it."

11. Take a look at Paint Shop Pro
Download their trial and see if you don't like it.
